Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-27-06  jahhaj: Chessbase are currently carrying a story accusing this player of cheating on their server. He won the 'Champions Challenge' but allegedly used an engine. He's been banned for three months.

(not sure how long this link will remain current)

Feb-27-06  NimzoKing: hmmm. Can anyone not just say anyone is cheating though, how can such accusations be proven?
Feb-27-06  Caissanist: Probably Kurtenkov did something silly like inadvertantly post some engine analysis on a chat window, or play the engine's first choice move every single time. I don't know of any real way to catch cheaters at internet chess, except for very stupid ones.
Feb-27-06  jahhaj: I don't think there can be proof, but you can get evidence in several ways.

Computers don't play like humans, if you are making a lot of computer like moves you are probably using a computer.

In the case of chessbase I'm sure their software is configured to detect chess engines running on the same machine. You'd have to be pretty stupid to get caught like that though.
