Domdaniel: Paul Whitehead spent several months in Ireland in 1983, during which time he won seven tournaments -- in Dublin, Belfast, Derry, Castlebar, etc.

Oct-02-21  Z truth 000000001: <GSM>, <whiteshark> I think the other poster was mistaken.

<David Lazarus reported in his online article on the psychological background of this step: Pawns of the Game - Love, obsession, madness, and other matters of chess (see the 2nd half of the text) which also contains further details on Jay and his older brother Paul (a comparable chess talent). Already before (in 1984) Jay Whitehead had joined the Hare Krishna sect. >

kwabc is generally quite reliable, and the contemporaneous literature is also supportive.

Oct-02-21  Z truth 000000001: It should be mentioned that both Jay and Paul appear in a photo on the kwabc page just mentioned.

PS- I discovered a series of early childhood chess reminiscences by Paul Whitehead here:

(Scroll way down on each) ... Lots of photos to boot.

Paul's still plenty active at Mechanics Institute in SF.
