Jun-05-17  Nosnibor: In the Romanian Championship of 1953 Balanel shared first place with 12/17 together with Troianescu and Voiculescu. A play off was arranged between the three and Balanel won with 6 points far ahead of Voiculescu 3.5 and Troianescu 3.A similar situation occurred in the 1955 Championship when Balanel finished in a triple tie with Ciocaltea and Gunsberger on 11.5/19. When the play-off was arranged Gunsberger withdrew because of University studies and Balanel beat Ciocaltea by 3 games to 1.I found it surprising that there are none of his games from these championships shown in CG database. Finally when Balanel won the 1958 Championship he took sole first place with 12/19 .Then it appears shortly after this he was incarcerated and is presumably still alive ?
Dec-13-17  virginmind: He was sent in an asylum by the Securitate, for some reason, but I have no knowledge what happened to him after that. Maybe some other people who know his whereabouts could tell us?
