GrahamClayton: It is interesting that Cohen's 4 games in the database are spread over 35 years. Does he only play infrequently in major tournaments?

GrahamClayton: Jack Collins wrote a book 'called My seven chess prodigies", which listed a Lewis Cohen along with Fischer, Byrne, Lombardy, D Byrne, Weinstein and Matera. Is this the same player?

Phony Benoni: Yes. He was one of the later pupils of Collins, born in 1960.
Feb-18-12  PhilFeeley: Is this the Lewis Cohen that played Bobby Fischer in the 60 Minutes video?

http://chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp...

Feb-19-12  Meshter: PhilF, it must be the same. On the USCF site, he has no games or tournaments after 1991, a rating 0f 2147 and a Master title. No records of him on the FIDE site. It would be interesting if one could reconstruct that Fischer game from the video...

perfidious: How well I remember Lewis Cohen from the early-mid 1970s. That kid could play, but soon disappeared from tournaments. Even Tim Krabbe, who knows everything about everything, was mystified:

May-05-18  wrap99: I met Lewis in 1977 at the US Open where Jack Collins also made an appearance. Amazing to speak briefly Mr. Collins and I spoke with Cohen several times during that event and 1978 in Phoenix. Obviously a bright kid and pretty nice guy who I guess went on to college. There is a Lewis Cohen who is an attorney -- not an uncommon name but it would not surprise me if that is what became of Cohen. Maybe he himself can tell us??
Feb-27-20  Mudphudder: What's the highest rating Lewis got to? I'm just curious, since most of Collins' students went on to become grandmasters.
Feb-27-20  Granny O Doul: I'm sure most of Collins' students never came close to master, let alone grandmaster. Cohen I guess rated a chapter in the book to give it a bit more currency.

Perhaps the thought, at the time the book was written, was that Cohen would bid fair to join his illustrious predecessors, all of whom became IMs at the very least.

MissScarlett: Wanted: one of Cohen's early games where his juvenile opponent plays the King's Indian.

FSR: I don't think the four most recent games, supposedly of Lew Cohen's, are in fact his. According to the USCF website, Lewis H. Cohen, whom I believe to be the same person as our <Lew Cohen>, last had a published rating in the January 1990 rating supplement. http://www.uschess.org/msa/MbrDtlMa... I believe that the games since then from <L Cohen> are really from the Illinois player Lawrence S Cohen. http://www.uschess.org/msa/MbrDtlMa... Note that three of the four games were played in Illinois, where Lawrence Cohen lives. Lewis Cohen is a New Yorker.
Feb-03-21  Halfmpa: I found an obituary for a Lewis H Cohen from Brooklyn who died July 2014. It does not mention chess, but I believe it’s our guy.
Feb-03-21  Granny O Doul: @Halfmpa: does your obit look that of someone born in 1960?
Feb-16-21  wrap99: @Halfmpa: not the right guy i am pretty sure and lewis cohen is a very common name.

Dec-26-21  ArkansasMike: Lew went to SUNY-Binghamton as an undergrad. He lived on my floor our freshman year. I remember him telling me he was a child prodigy and a speed chess champion, and once he held (and won) a multi-table exhibition in the student union, although by then he had essentially “retired” from chess. I think he majored in Poli Sci and from a quick web search it appears he’s now working in finance.
Dec-26-21  Caissanist: I assume <ArkansasMike> is referring to his LinkedIn profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lewis-h... .
