Dec-15-11  King Death: Maybe <Phony Benoni> can help, but out this way when I was young, there was a player named Alex Suhobeck.

Phony Benoni: <King Death> Probably Alex Suchobeck, who now has some games from the 1955 US Open in the database. I just double checked, and that spelling is correct. He's listed as being from Albany.
Dec-15-11  King Death: <Phony Benoni> Pay dirt! Here are 4 later games under this version of the last name, all from the 1971 US Open: http://www.365chess.com/players/Ale...

Phony Benoni: <King Death> Interesting. I checked my copy of the 1971 US Open tournament book, and he's Suhobeck.

Looked at a few more rating lists. By 1956 he had moved to California, still Suchobeck. After 1958 he disappears for a decade, then comes back as Suhobeck.

Tried the Social Security Death Index. Couldn't get all the information (SSDI is no longer free and not worth $150 a year to me), but I'm pretty sure now the Government thought his name was <Suhobeck> and I'll take their word over USCF any day.

Gypsy: Learned this from a fellow who knew Mr. A Suhobeck in California:

An expat from Russia; one time resident of Monterey, CA; top rating 2300+ and probably the strongest local player of the time; the winner of a central California championship. An avid hiker, but with a heart ailment.

GrahamClayton: Suhobeck finished =1st with Pal Benko, Alfonso Ferriz Salinas and Walter Browne at the 1975 United States Open, with a 7-1 score, and won the trophy for the best over-50 player.
