  Chessical: Yury Vasilchuk of Moscow played successfully in three Soviet Junior Championships 1945 1-3 place with T.Petrosian and A.Reshko; 1946 2nd place to T.Petrosian;
1947 6th place.

then he all but disappears! The database has no games of his until two in 1956, and one in 1961.

He was obviously a talented player, almost a Soviet Junior Champion twice, in the semi-finals of the Soviet Championship some ten years later, and able to beat Shamkovich in 1961. What happened to him? Did he have other interests to pursue, or did he not get the same support as given to Spassky or Korchnoi?

Feb-06-16  TheFocus: Happy birthday, Yury Vasilchuk.
