GrahamClayton: Budowski is an eminent scientist:

In 1951 Budowski won the Venezualan Campeonato de Extranjeros, the championship for foreign players.

He then defeated Julio Garcia, the winner of the Campeonato Nacional for local players, for the Campeón Absoluto de Venezuela title.

After the Machtergreifung in 1933 the Budowski's (a Jewish family) left Berlin for France. Where the young Gerardo became a shooting star in the Paris workers' chess circles and gave a numerous of simultaneous exhibitions in 1939.

At this year Gerardo also took part in the First Class (Section A) tournament of the British Chess Federation Congress in Bournemouth and the 14 year old won clearly his group with 9 out of 10!

keypusher: Here is a video of Budowski, aged 83, reflecting on his career. He talks about chess briefly starting at 3:31.

To think he might never have gotten away from the Nazis. See also Bernstein / J Zabludowski vs Alekhine / J Budowsky, 1940

Sep-29-23  Caissanist: Lively and thorough bio of Budowski (in Spanish, but Google translate works well on it) in the Costa Rican "Journal of Enviornmental Sciences" (although a Venezuelan citizen, Budowski lived in Costa Rica from 1948): https://www.revistas.una.ac.cr/inde... . He was a pioneer in sustainable land use management in Latin America in general and Costa Rica in particular, and seems to have played a major role in establishing Costa Rica's fine national park system.

One interesting anecdote: his family had originally planned to settle in Peru but American authorities would not let them pass through the Panama Canal since they were German. The ship had to turn around and wound up "temporarily" docking in Caracas, which is how they ultimately came to live in Venezuela.
