LASZLO BINET TAPASZTO
(born Sep-05-1930, 94 years old) Hungary (federation/nationality United States of America)

[what is this?]

Hungarian–Venezuelan chess master.

He twice participated in the Hungarian Chess Championship, in 1954 (won by László Szabó) and 1955 (won by Gedeon Barcza), and won a local tournament in Budapest in 1955. He fled Hungary after the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, and finally became a Venezuelan citizen.

Tapasztó won the Venezuelan Chess Championship six times (1964, 1966, 1971, 1983, 1990, and 1995), played at Caracas 1967 (zonal, Miguel Cuéllar won), and represented Venezuela in Chess Olympiads three times (1964, 1988, 1990).

At the end of the 1990s, he moved to the United States, where he played in the New York State championships at Saratoga Springs 2000 and Rochester 2001. Unfortunately, he had a stroke in 2005, but continues to play at the Rochester Chess Center.

Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-06-08  Resignation Trap: This player has four identities on our www.chessgames.com website. In addition to this page, he also has Binet , Laszlo T Binet and L Binet .

He was born in Oroshaza Hungary in 1930. He was a participant in the Hungarian Championship tournaments of 1954 (+4=2-12) and 1955 (+3=7-8).

He moved to Venezuela and was the Venezuelan national champion in 1964, 1966, 1971, 1983, 1990 and 1995. He played for the Venezuelan team in the Olympiads of 1964, 1988, and 1990.

He is still active in chess and frequently plays in tournaments in and around Rochester, New York. Current rating: 2316. See: http://main.uschess.org/assets/msa_... .

"Tapaszto" is his family name, but when he came to Venezuela, in true Spanish-style, his name appeared as "Laszlo Tapaszto Binet", leading many to write his name as simply "Binet". To further complicate matters, in Hungary, it is standard practice to put family surnames first when appearing in print, i.e. <Portisch Lajos>.

Dec-18-08  jrofrano: I had the pleasure of meeting laszlo last night at the RCC and he is a very entertaining man. He did an impression of walter browne at the board being jittery. And when i asked him if walter would get into time trouble he said, "get into?! He lived in time trouble!" He also is one of the few people who can say that he has a perfect score against fischer 1-0-0 100%.
Aug-18-18  carpetshark: He fled from Hungary like many others after the 1956 revolution was crushed by the Soviet forces. According to the memoirs of GM István Bilek, he worked for a while as a teacher in Caracas.
