 | | John Saunders: How is it known that the player whose games appear here has the forename 'Nigel'? It's certainly not the Nigel Freeman who was a FIDE official as he was only born in 1954. I myself have not been able to discover any further details about N L Freeman and, unless someone knows better than me, I would suggest adjusting the name here to 'N L Freeman' until we can discover more. |
|
May-26-19 | | Nosnibor: N L Freeman first appeared in the 1959 grading list with a grade of 4a equivalent to 193-200.He was listed with a club in Ealing. In 1963 he was playing for Middlesex on board 13 and won a game in the English Counties Final against F.Higginbottom. After this he appears to be playing mainly correspondence chess. In the British Correspondence Individual Championship for 1964/65 he finished 5th with 5.5/11.I have not yet been able to establish his first name as Nigel. |

 | | Tabanus: Middlesex County Times, 19 October 1957, p. 13: <We are sorry to have to report that Neil Freeman (Ealing), who showed such promise by tieing with M. Blaine in the Middlesex Individual Championship this year, has contracted a serious illness and will not be available to play over the board chess for some time. He has decided to take part in one of the tournaments promoted by the B.C.C.A. and no doubt his correspondence chess will stand him in good stead when he returns to play for the county team again.> Middlesex County Times, 5 December 1959, p. 15:
<Ealing Chess Club. ... Neil Freeman has joined Harrow, ..> There is a Neil Leslie Freeman, b. 24 April 1937 (apparently in Brentford Middlesex, that's very near to Ealing), d. 2005 in Watford. A certain Neil L. Freeman married in Ealing in 1962 to Carol Dutton. |

 | | Tabanus: The newspapers also have a "K. Freeman" in Ealing Chess Club. The 1939 England and Wales Register has what may be the two (brothers or half-brothers?) in "Richester Road "The Rectory" Nursing home", in Chichester, Sussex: Keith Freeman, b. 22 Aug 1935
Neil L. Freeman, b. 24 Apr 1937, with the "L" added with another pen. |
|
May-26-19 | | Nosnibor: <Tabanus> Then this player is Neil Leslie Freeman and not Nigel Freeman as stated by John Saunders. |
|
May-26-19
 | | Tabanus: <Nosnibor> Yes.. Neil Leslie Freeman (1937-2005) with 99% certainty. I also find two passenger lists. Christine Freeman 28, Keith 4 and Neil 3, address 4 Chatsworth Rd., Ealing, London leaving Liverpool 24 July 1940 on board "Dutchess of Richmond" heading for New York. "Mauretania" from New York arrived in Liverpool 22 May 1944. On board was Chrissin Freeman, 31, 4 Chatsworth Road, Ealing London, with Keith Freeman, 8 and Neil Freeman, 7. |

 | | Tabanus: The Stage, 14 December 2000, p. 29 reports from what is going on at the Friends Meeting House in Ealing every Friday morning. One of the visitors in a group of older people is <Neil Freeman, who drives in from Watford with his wife and in-laws.> So I'd say Neil Leslie Freeman 1937-2005 with 99,9% certainty. |
