May-30-05 | | hintza: More to the point, Anthony Wirig! ;-) |

 | | TheAlchemist: Thanks for that, I only found this page through the game Acs vs A Wirig, 2001 and so I didn't see this "duplicate". |

Feb-25-10 | | technical draw: I'm betting on him in the chessbookie game. If I don't he'll kill me. |

|
Mar-27-11 | | zoren: I haven't seen much of him since his playchess fame, nice to see him doing well in the 2011 EIC. |

 | | eternaloptimist: Man, that's 1 stupid & weird looking hairdo!! Although 1 of the reasons for having it might be to distrupt his opponents concentration (psychological). The other reason(s) would be: he is crazy &/or he really likes it?!?! |
|
Jun-05-13 | | CFMEU: Just played some really weird moves against Bacrot in the French Team Championships. A pity Chessgames ain't covering it. 1-0 to Bacrot. |
|
Mar-14-16 | | waustad: Most of his pictures look much more normal. Then again, without the "My Favorite Martian" do he'd be a minimal GM from a country with several much stronger ones and nobody would remember him. |

 | | offramp: He get signal? |
|
Dec-17-16 | | S4NKT: Most people are not brave enough to have an unusual hairstyle and only want to 'fit in' and 'not be noticed', ever since the 1990's most men just have 3cm or so of nondescript hair, unless you're Italian or unusually fashionable. Considering his clothing in a picture elsewhere he's most likely into some kind of trance or cyber-goth music subculture, which is respectable. |

 | | eternaloptimist: Lol 😃 that would be 😎 if he did get a signal. He could just take a 📺 w/ him wherever he goes & watch it wherever he’s able to pick up a signal...built in 🐇 ears. |

 | | eternaloptimist: I see that CG changed his pic to a pic where he looks normal. <Karpova> posted this link that shows the pic that used to be his profile pic here, where he has a bizarre-looking hairdo.: https://en.chessbase.com/news/2007/... |

Feb-03-25 | | stone free or die: <DaeWang: What is his ethnicity? The French alphabet doesn't have a 'W'.> Well, you're exaggerating a bit, but that's understandable. French certainly does have "W" in its modern alphabet, but it's only fairly recently that its status became "official" (i.e. it's in <Petit Robert>, see following): <The French Wikipedia article on “W”[1] puts it best, so I shall attempt to translate a section of it here:The letter W was the last commonly accepted letter to enter the French alphabet. The Petit Robert [a major French dictionary] recognized it as the 23rd letter of the alphabet in 1964, while the Petit Larousse [other major dictionary] had incorporated it since at least 1951. However, W had been used for a long time to transcribe foreign nouns and proper names. In 1751, Diderot and D’Alembert’s Encyclopédie used W but indicated in its “W” article that “this letter does not properly belong to the French alphabet. It is only used out of the necessity to match our writing to that of foreigners”. Similarly, the Dictionnaire de Trévoux in 1771 states that “this letter is not properly French. It belongs to the people of the North. However, we shall accept it for a few proper names”.> Thanks to <Adrien Lucas Ecoffet>, https://www.quora.com/Does-the-Fren... |

Feb-05-25 | | stone free or die: Here's a world map showing the distribution of the name <Wirig> https://forebears.io/surnames/wirig
I'm not sure how trustworthy it is, but I would hazard it's at least indicative. As for the name's meaning, again not being sure of the reliability, one website offers this: <Meaning of Wirig
A variant of the Germanic surname derived from "wigric" meaning warrior.> https://namecensus.com/last-names/w... |
