 | | Joshka: Just read a sad note about this player....yea...must be him...whats a shame |
Dec-13-04 | | Lawrence: <M R Venkatesh> was born 20/05/85, making him 19 years old. <K Venkatesh>, the player who has muscular dystrophy and a chest infection--and wants to die quickly so he can donate his organs--is 25. |
Dec-13-04 | | chesscookie: Is this poor soul the present Indian champ? Has he ever won it? |
Dec-15-04 | | Lawrence: <chesscookie>, you yourself are Indian, isn't it? :-) |
Dec-17-04 | | chesscookie: <Lawrence> That is correct ;-) Though, I am Anand's biggest fan, I still like top quality chess from any player. |
Dec-17-04 | | Flyboy216: <you yourself are Indian, isn't it? :-)> Considering only desis use the phrase "isn't it?," you are proably one too ;) And considering only desis use the term "desi," it appears I am too :) |
Dec-19-04 | | Lawrence: <Flyboy216>, I had never heard the word "desis" before but I see it applies to anyone from the Indian subcontinent. What's the origin? <isn't it?> as a catch-all question tag--sort of like <n'est-ce pas?> in French--was used often in a comical English TV programme, a series of sketches about Indian family life in Britain. Also, Sarah MacDonald includes it several times in her "Holy Cow!" |
Dec-19-04 | | ughaibu: One of my aunts, who was Dutch, used "isn't it" in the same way. |
Dec-19-04 | | arifattar: <Lawrence> Actually, 'desi' comes from 'des' meaning homeland or nation but mostly used in the former sense. So 'desi' means person from my homeland.
Most often used by students from India and Pakistan to refer to the vast Asian diaspora in the West.
Used in the following variations:
ABCD - American Born Confused Desi.
BBCD - British Born Confused Desi. |

 | | cu8sfan: <<K Venkatesh>, the player who has muscular dystrophy and a chest infection--and wants to die quickly so he can donate his organs--is 25.> Maybe this player isn't <K Venkatesh> but I read in yesterday's edition of Chess Today that <K Venkatesh> died on December 17th. He was fighting hard to be able and donate his organs. I hope his untimely death at least saved someone else's life. |

Jan-24-06 | | dakgootje: <One of my aunts, who was Dutch, used "isn't it" in the same way.> Part of the English grammar you get to learn in, at least the parts where ive lived, the Netherlands... (as you may notice, i've never been good in grammar ;-) |
