John Saunders: Every reference I've been able to find to this player that appear in magazines and bulletins are as 'AJ Sutton'. But his name was John Anthony Sutton. His obituary (in BCM, October 1987) tells us that 'Tony Sutton was a prominent CC player who wrote articles on his favourite openings, the French McCutcheon and Tarrasch Defence gambit variation, in the BCCA magazine. He was prominent in Staffordshire chess as a junior when he was known as A. J. Sutton. Subsequently he found from his birth certificate that his initials were the other way round.' I have found that his full name was John Anthony Sutton, and he was born on 8 June 1940 and died in the second quarter of 1987 in Peterborough.

John Saunders: Sorry, I should have added his exact date of death (which BCM gives) - 26 May 1987

  tpstar: LIFE Master AJ!

Or maybe LIFE Master JA. =)

Aug-15-17  FrogC: I remember his McCutcheon articles in the BCCA magazine: 'The Fighting French'. I'd never heard of it at the time.
Aug-15-17  Nosnibor: I recall playing him in a county match October 1974 when he played second board for Huntingdonshire The opening was a Gruenfeld against his Queen`s Pawn which was drawn in 17 moves. He was always known as Tony and always happy to analyse the game afterwards.
