John Saunders: Jeffrey Ansell, born 13 September 1920, in Whitechapel, London, died 16 May 1985, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

There's a very good obituary of him at the British Go Association website: <https://www.britgo.org/bgj/06516>

Jeff Ansell was both a work colleague and chess rival of Dr James M Aitken when they both worked at GCHQ Cheltenham. There was never much between them in terms of playing strength. To date, 30 extant scores of competition games between them have come to light, and the score for those games is 6 wins to Aitken, 5 to Ansell, with 19 draws.

The obituary tells us Jeff Ansell eventually turned more to bridge and then, from the mid-1970s, Go.

Amongst his chess successes was the 1964 West of England Championship and he won at least one Gloucestershire county championship title. He scored 4?/11 in the 1951 British Championship, 5/11 in 1961, 6/11 in 1964 and 1965, 5/11 in 1966. I've not found any games for him thereafter.
