Born in Jaguey Grande, Cuba. Gonzalez started playing chess when he was 10 and he has traveled extensively to find top-notch competition in countries such as Colombia, Cuba, Spain and Venezuela and in several U.S. cities. He was a member of the cuban national team and, in 1996, he was the highest-rated chess player on the island. In December 1999, he defected during a tournament in Colombia and came to the United States in 2001.

He won the Grandmaster title in the following tournaments, in 2004 at the Mashantucket Open and the Lindsborg Open and in 2007, at the Baniolas International Open,he finished first tied with Jose Gonzalez Garcia, Mihail Marin and Lewan Aroszidze.

Winner of the 2004 U.S. Open Chess Championship in Fort Lauderdale, Florida,tied with Alexander Onischuk, Rodrigo Vasquez Schroeder, Aleksander Wojtkiewicz, Ildar Ibragimov, Andranik Matikozyan and Marcel Martinez.

He lives in South Florida.
