SYSTEMSSON
(born Feb-29-1900, died Apr-01-1979) Ireland (federation/nationality Sweden)

[what is this?]

Zoltan Arpad Ulf Min Systemsson IV was born February 29, 1900, in Dublin. Before he learned to speak, he had moved into Sweden and thus had learned Swedish as his native language. At the age of six he had learned how to play by imitating his father play the London System, and although he still was fuzzy about some of the rules, his talents were realized nonetheless. He began to win many local tournaments and soon the Swedish chess scene was abuzz with talk of this prodigy.

Unlike many of the world's top players, he continued to advance even through World War One. His career took a turn in 1921 after a severe case of depression as a result of his father dying in a tragic train crash, but he persevered. His most famous game was played in 1927 against the marvelous player Aron Nimzowitsch. Systemsson lost, but continued to play actively in Sweden until he retired in 1956. His efforts were celebrated until his death in 1979, at which point people started to slowly realize that he was a bit of patzer all along.

There is, in fact, no real player named Systemsson, invented by Hans Kmoch. This biography is a joke and an homage to Kmoch’s wit. His game against Aron Nimzowitsch in 1927 a fabrication used as an April Fool's joke. We hope you laughed at it.

No, it wasn't that funny. But it was slightly amusing.

I guess having the April Fool's joke be the Player of The Day instead of the GOTD is a positive.

Apr-01-18  Castleinthesky: I used to fly to all of his tournaments to watch him play. A true artist!

In the prototype that Wright Brothers gave you to fly?

Computers came to be called in 21st century as systems because of Systemsson.

In a way, this gentleman was precursor to how the technology would revolutionize the game.

All Hail, Min Systemsson.

Apr-27-21  talfan: He died at April's Fool too, nice.

Well, whiteshark, that would be indeed how Systems get Systemssons.

Where the ref for the Kmoch's, er, "joke"?

This I gotta see.

Retireborn: <stone free> According to Ray Keene's Nimzowitsch book, the parody was first published in German in 1927 (no further details)

The English translation, which Keene quotes in full, was also written by Kmoch, and first appears in the American Magazine Chess Review in 1951.

Jan-22-24  stone free or die: Thanks <Retireborn> for that lead.

Here's the link to the April 1951 <CR> issue:

https://uscf1-nyc1.aodhosting.com/C...

On p104 there is the title of the article -

<An Ingeneous Example of My System - by Aaron Nimzovich>

It has the game <Nimzovich--Systemsson - Copenhagen 1927>

(PCO won't have it!)

With <Systemsson>'s bio on p105.

It also has this footnote at the bottom of p105:

<To the incredulous, the above article was published in the February, 1928, issue of the Wiener Schachzeitung under the editorship of Hans KMoch. Kmoch admired and esteemed Nlmzovlch as a great player and a profound and original thinker, yet he could not help poking sly fun at Nimzovich's often pompous and bombastic manner, Luckily this rollicking parody Is so good-natured, with a row grains of sense artfully concealed in a farrago of nonsense, that Nimzovlch expressed himself as vastly amused by it.-Ed. >

Jan-22-24  stone free or die: Here's the WSZ ref:

https://anno.onb.ac.at/cgi-content/...

The player's name is <Sistemsson> there (Feb 1928 p57).

(And Nimzowitsch is spelled Nimzowitsch there as well.)

* * * * *

I should mention that the actual author is unidentified - though Kmoch is well known as being capable of that satirical style.

I wonder if there is any identification of Kmoch as author in the literature, or of Nimzowitsch's reported positive reaction to the send-up.
