Dec-10-07  whiteshark: <virginmind: <fritz 11 gives +4.47 at ply 25 (after 43.Rh3 played)>> Yes, I cut it off after +3.93/19ply...
Dec-10-07  acirce: <why on earth did he choose the petrov in which he has no experience?> He's probably been reading posts on chessgames.com and thus learned that the Petrov is an automatic draw.
Dec-10-07  cotdt: Carlsen was blown out of the water by an amateur!
Dec-10-07  lezoa: Magnus tried the Russian defence which he is not positionally familiar. Wrong chose !
Dec-10-07  jedrus07: This is a great point <acirce> :)))
Dec-10-07  whiteshark: Tomorrow there will be only 2 out of 128 players left, that's 1,56%.
Dec-10-07  virginmind: <Joshka> yeah, carlsen is obviously much better than, say, fischer at same age
Dec-10-07  ajile: <gorash: why on earth did he choose the petrov in which he has no experience?>

This was the first question we all asked at the beginning of the game. He probably had a prepared line and was hoping Kamsky would play into it. Instead of course Kamsky played his normal way which is non-main lines but solid. So I'm guessing Carlsen was in unfamiliar territory for most of the opening, leading to him taking too much time.

Dec-10-07  MuradJ: All this means that there is in future we will see Kamsky - Topalov match!

Joshka: Carlsen's time will come, has not even come close to reaching his prime. He'll be a champ no doubt, maybe another 4-6 years, if that long. Congradulations to Kamsky and his comeback!!
Dec-10-07  acirce: Anyway, congratulations to Kamsky. Carlsen was really outplayed in these games, it was almost embarrassing to see.
Dec-10-07  notyetagm: <DiWally: Carlsen lose his duel against Kamsky becaue of his opening choices - Scotch and Petroff>

Dvoretsky pointed out that that is -exactly- the problem with matches, that they are primarily <OPENING DUELS>.

Magnus is not necessarily a worse chess player overall than Kamsky, it's just that he could not get positions out of the opening to show his skills.

Dec-10-07  cotdt: <virginmind: <Joshka> yeah, carlsen is obviously much better than, say, fischer at same age>

No, Fischer was in the Top 10 by age 17, according to Chessmetrics. Carlsen has yet to break the Top 10 and he is already old.

Joshka: <Virginmind> Well don't know about his age now, when Bobby was 17, but Fischer did say in the early part of 2005, that Carlsen knew more about chess than he did at his age. So did Bobby jump higher from 15-17 than Magnus has?
Dec-10-07  whiteshark: Congrats to Gata Kamsky for taking the chance. :)
Dec-10-07  Caloy: Congratulations Kamsky! I hope you win your finals match too! Great comeback :)
Dec-10-07  amadeus: <MuradJ: All this means that there is in future we will see Kamsky - Topalov match!>

"Alexey Shirov beat Gata Kamsky 9 to 6, with 8 draws."

Dec-10-07  virginmind: <Joshka> ah really, he said that? got a link?

Joshka: <Notyetagm> Well this is NOT the fault of matches, LOL..the fault of SHORT 2 game matches;-).....in a REAL match with plenty of games, you have time to prepare many openings.
Dec-10-07  pereznm07: I bet GM Karjakin will become World Cup Champion 2007 because of his overall records to GM Shirov and GM Kamsky!!!, I hope it will be happen!!!
Dec-10-07  Eyal: If Kamsky is winning his opening duels now, he really might be unstoppable...
Dec-10-07  notyetagm: <lezoa: Magnus tried the Russian defence which he is not positionally familiar. Wrong chose !>

Yes, this game was very reminiscent of Kasparov(!) playing the Berlin Wall(!) and being demolished by Polgar: Kasparov had all the chess skill in the world but was not initmately familiar with the resulting positions and was blown off the board.

Dec-10-07  znprdx: <cotdt: Carlsen was blown out of the water by an amateur!> and I thought there was a limit to the number of possible stupid comments...oh well

meanwhile wouldn't 37...Kg7 have held? I didn't understand Kf7 at all - (nor c5 for that matter) - it is almost a strange turnabout...was it really a win in all variations? - NOW would be a good time for the digital diddlers to produce some analysis...

ps<CG> where's the other game?

Dec-10-07  fuerst: So Kamsky wins!
Congrats to his fans!
