Jan-31-04 | | PinkPanther: Can somebody say drawmaster????? And he's a bad dresser to boot....I guess that means Van der Wiel = Leko...well, not quite. |
Mar-26-04 | | nikolaas: I thought it was Johan Van der Wiel and noy John. |
Apr-28-04 | | fred lennox: I'm quite fond of Van Der Wiel. There is a lot of draws. Like Schlecter, I admire him despite of this, not because. |
Jul-01-04 | | Morty: -PinkPanther- at least Van der Wiel doesn't have that extremely feminine look about him, like Leko does. In some of his pictures, Leko looks like an Hungarian soccer mom or something. (Note: he looks a bit like a woman, but I am not judging his playing ability, he is very good.) |
Jul-28-04 | | ruylopez900: Van der Wiel is Dutch, correct? |
Oct-13-04 | | nikolaas: Correct. |
Nov-02-04 | | aw1988: When you absolutely don't know what to do anymore, it is time to panic. Heh um... :P |
Nov-02-04 | | pawntificator: And that applies to anything, not just chess.
I respect a person that can wrench a draw out of almost any position. And the ability to draw is necessary in a GM, and without it one can never advance very far in chess. I need to work on that ability in myself. I always play all out for a win, even when I don't have chances. |
Dec-27-04 | | erasmus: John van der Wiel is leading the Harmonie Chess Tournament. For anyone interested in seeing the games I post the link: http://www.so-on.org/kerst2004/2004... |
Dec-27-04 | | percyblakeney: The top game of the day is played between van der Wiel and 14-year-old Ukrainian Yuri Kuzubov at the moment, the latter will catch up with the leader if he wins. |
Dec-27-04 | | percyblakeney: And winning is indeed what Kuzubov is doing, it will be even at the top with three rounds to go. |
Dec-27-04 | | erasmus: it certainly looks like it <percyblakeney>. Kuzubov is one pawn up and looks in control of the game. |
Dec-27-04 | | erasmus: Kuzubov has snatched at least a horse now. Kuzubov won for sure. |
Dec-28-04 | | percyblakeney: Quick draws in the top games of the seventh round, van der Wiel-Visser after ten moves. |
Dec-28-04 | | erasmus: He is living up to his reputation as a drawmaster, just like <PinkPanther> said. Drawing in just 10 moves...tsk tsk... |
Dec-29-04 | | erasmus: And another quick draw for John today in the 8th round. This time after 14 moves. |
Dec-30-04 | | percyblakeney: All the top board games of the last round have finished with draws, van der Wiel's game is the only one left, but it also looks drawish. |
Dec-30-04 | | percyblakeney: Yep, now it's drawn there as well, which means that van der Wiel, Kuzubov, Nijboer and Visser all finished with 6/9. |

 | | WTHarvey: Here are some crucial positions from some of his earlier games http://www.wtharvey.com/wiel.html |
Dec-19-05 | | hidude: <nikolaas> my first name is John, not Johan |
Dec-21-05 | | billiejoelover21: kool who ast? |
Jan-08-06 | | Koster: His rating seems to have dropped quite a bit. He was moved down to the C group at Corus. |

Jun-29-07 | | bystander: John van der Wiel played a fine Dutch championship 2007. Although all his games were draws (11 in a row, exceeding Andersson and Ribli in the Bazna Kings tournement 2007 with 10 draws each) some of his games were very interesting. |
