Joshka: <dac1990> Go to the article on the front of the chessgames.com home page, there is an article about 2nd place finisher Harikrishna. This article states Izoria didn't enter till the 5th round, and he was given 3 points to start the tourney. If this article is incorrect, maybe chessgames.com could pull it?
May-24-05  acirce: What a ridiculous article. That's journalism for you. Of course he wasn't "given 3 points". I don't even know what it is supposed to mean. Every point he got he earned on the board.

May-24-05  lopium: It's funny to see ratings over 3500! It's not similar to the elo system. On FICS, it's more similar, and the level is very strong. There's always a lot of people to play (around 400, but It can grow up to 700 or down to 250), the best rating in FICS is the one of Deep Junior, 2700.... There's some GM's, but they are far away computers, and not only Deep Junior. Gadir Guseinov for example is around 2100 or something like that. The best human's rating I saw is about 2200 in blitz and in the 2300s in standard. I am around 1500 in blitz there.
May-24-05  Chathurang1: My brother is P Mahesh Chandran, who nearly beat shabalov in this tournament
May-24-05  riskdoc: This guy must be pretty good with the Caro-Kann. Only one loss in 21 games and two wins as black at HB using the CK.
May-24-05  Resignation Trap: <Chathurang1> Here is your brother's game. Do you know where he missed the win? P Mahesh Chandran vs Shabalov, 2005
May-25-05  MoonlitKnight: <lopium> Are you sure? Because I just played a 2120 on FICS and he didn't play very good blitz at all.
May-25-05  MrSifter: <lopium> How are GM's being 2100 on FICS anywhere close to "real ratings". The best humans are in the 2700's pushing 2800 FIDE.

Playchess.com is the closest to FIDE ratings. Most GM's are only around 100 or so points higher than their Fide rating, although a lot of untitled players have ratings in the 2600-2700.

May-26-05  Montreal1666: Does anyone know why Izoria didn't get
to play in rounds 2 and 5 and was awarded full points?
May-26-05  yoozum: <Mr. Sifter>, in most cases, it's a lot more than 100 points. Nigel frequently flirts with 3000, and we have people like Vugar Gashimov, a sub-2600 GM, who are above 3100 on a regular basis. These are but a few of the examples.
May-26-05  lopium: Well, I don't want to critic chess servers at all. I only see right now that the best human player on FICS is 2350 exactly, the 10th is 2200 exactly. That is in blitz. In standard, the best human is about 2380 and the 10th best human is 2141. Computers are a lot much stronger than humans in this server. As I said, even the GM's who are playing there are less strong. But it's normal, they don't play as they play in tournaments, they just play for fun, so it's normal they aren't that good on FICS. Computers always play like they do, and It show us that. If you have beated a 2100 on FICS in blitz and he didn't play well, it's very possible, but it is only one case in only one or few games.... Anyway maybe it was a temporally rating too, which is not stable at all. Last thing : chess players on FICS will play less good than in tournaments, so If a chess server give them a rating superior that they FIDE rating, It's not like the elo system at all. In this way, FICS is close to the FIDE rating I think, or even much strict.
May-26-05  dac1990: <Montreal1666> Izoria drew the second and won the fifth, both over the board. Where do all of these "facts" come from about Izoria's performance?

Well when you download the games from
the HP Global site (and here as well)
there are no games for rounds 2 and 5
for Izoria. Where is your source?

May-27-05  Resignation Trap: <Montreal1666> To find out what who-did-to-whom go to http://www.hbfoundation.org/gcc/res... , then hit "STANDINGS", and then hit "Open".

According to the crosstable, Izoria drew with player #109 (Victor Plotkin) in round two. And in round five, Izoria defeated player #2 (Ilya Smirin).

May-27-05  Montreal1666: <Resignation Trap:>

Thanks. I take your word for it.

I was really interested to see those games. Do you were one might find them.

May-27-05  Resignation Trap: <Montreal1666> Why Soitny! Try http://www.chesslive.de, then bring about the position after White's 12th move (or an opening position from any game, for that matter) and a whole list will appear with all known transpositions. But pay attention as to whom played those games, as there are many examples of two weak players entering the line. For example, if you find a game that looks good, but was played in, let's say, the Scottish girls Under-12 championship of 1998, please excercise caution!

There are lots of blunders by children, adults and computers alike.

Another example: you are looking up analysis on 1. e4 Nc6 2. d4 e5 3. d5, anyone with even a minimal of experience can plainly see that 3...Nd4? loses a Knight to the simple 4. c3. Yet chesslive.de has dozens of examples of games beginning with those very moves.

May-27-05  Montreal1666: <Resignation Trap:> Thanks I am familiar with that websites
Oct-23-05  Maroczy: What is Izoria's ethnicity?
Oct-23-05  Resignation Trap: <Maroczy> Izoria is from Georgia.
Jan-06-06  refutor: what's with his hat?
Jan-06-06  chessmaster pro: yeah it's like the first gm i have seen that has a hat on
Sep-23-06  positionalbrilliancy: I like the hat. But not with that brown shirt...

Nov-25-07  talisman: what was the problem with izoria's visa, keeping him out of the world cup?
Nov-25-07  dx9293: Since he can't play in Khanty-Mansyk, he's playing in the National Chess Congress in Philadelphia, USA! He has 3.4/4, in second place. Tournament is 6 rounds, rounds 5 and 6 today.
