CHESSGAMES - BEER

[what is this?]

Beer is believed to be over 10,000 years old. Although no one knows its exact origins, some agricultural historians believe that the first beer may have been produced accidentally when a stash of grain was soaked by rain and then warmed by the sun. If this mixture were spontaneously fermented by wild, airborne yeast—which thrives in just these warm, moist conditions—beer would have been produced (Encarta).

Fermented beverages have been preferred over water throughout the ages: they are safer, provide psychotropic effects, and are more nutritious. Some have even said alcohol was the primary agent for the development of Western civilization, since more healthy individuals (even if inebriated much of the time) lived longer and had greater reproductive success.   Open Defence: <mandar> Beer is allergic to Math
Oct-29-05  mandar: <Opendefence>Good joke but i think i would help to change a bit.
Oct-29-05  jcmoral: The world running out of beer. Now that's horror!

  chancho: Beer,it may look like piss,but boy oh boy,a 10,000 year run in popularity cannot be underestimated!
Oct-29-05  geaux82: <mandar> i doesn't think no one going to absorbs the comedy you transmitting on Beer's law! good Beer jokes is involves the pissing, not the quizzing!!!!!
Oct-29-05  Knight13: A cup of beer throws your stress away! (This is true, but many became an alchoholic because of this. Many teenagers drink beer because of many stress they're under and depression. They know it's bad, but they can't help it. That's why 1/2 million teenagers attempts suicide each year and 5000 of them suceeds, which is sad, of course. I've even thought about suicide. Why? Because I get bullied too much. I know how it feels ;). Hang in there.)
Oct-29-05  hintza: Well, some of us drink something stronger, but that's not the point.
Oct-29-05  Akavall: <That's why 1/2 million teenagers attempts suicide each year and 5000 of them suceeds, which is sad, of course.> That's really sad.

I think teenagers dring because is 'bad', and 'bad' is 'cool'. Which is stupid, of course.

Oct-29-05  Anatooly Homedepotov: <Knight13> I've been bullied before, and know what it's like as well. Make sure your teachers know what those teenage terrorists are doing so they can be properly disciplined or expelled. Lots of people have thought of ending it all but that's a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Hang in there yourself, man. Don't let some stupid jerks damage your quality of life.
Oct-29-05  aw1988: Bullying is the equivilant of trolling on the Kramnik page.

Wait, sorry, wrong topic.

*leaves*

Oct-29-05  NakoSonorense: relax there... dont commit suicide... it might kill you.
Oct-29-05  aw1988: It's going to be a check or a pawn kill.

Oct-31-05  mandar: Well we will start with easy problems:
One whose post appears first on this page gets 7 points for one sum if he is completely right some working is necessary.The second gets 4 points and the third gets 1 point.Solving by different method compared to others gets +2 point.

Here is my first question.

1.A tractor without any sugar bags in it can run at the maximum speed of 20kmph.If the speed is diminished by the quantity which varies directly as the square root of the number of sugar bags kept in it.When 9 bagsare kept its maximum speed is 8 kmph find the number of sugar bags ythe tractor can carry.

2.A bullet train takes some hours to cover the distance of 2100km at some speed. If the speed is increased by 70kmph then it takes 5 hours less to cover the same distance.Find the speed of the bullet train.

3.If a^2 + b^2 + c^2 is directly proportional to ab and a+b+c is a constant then prove that-a+b-c is dirctly proportional to ab

4.A cliff and a tower stand on a same horizontal plane.The angle of depression of the top and the bottom of the toweras seen from the top of the cliff are 25 degrees and 70 degrees respectively.The height of the tower is 90 metres.Find the height of the cliff and the distance between the bottoms of the cliff and the tower

  Open Defence: <mandar> One glass of beer is said to diminish one's Mathematical ability by 1/1000th .. I have probably had 600 beers in my life time .. what is my resultant mathematical ability LOL
Oct-31-05  mandar: total-6/1000

  Open Defence: No <Mandar> total - (600 * (1/1000))

i.e. total - 6/10 meaning I have only 40% of my mathematical ability left all thanks to <Beer> :-D

Oct-31-05  TIMER: <Open Defence> If each beer you have multiplies your ability by 0.999, so take off thousandths of ever smaller amounts:

0.999^600= ~0.55, so you would still have about 55% left!

Oct-31-05  mandar: U r right open defence:
A beer reduces ones math logic :-D
Oct-31-05  mandar: Ok try out these sums i have mentioned the points system!
Oct-31-05  Udit Narayan: What's going on here? Maths for fun? No way. Maths does not have anything to do with entertainment. Maths is making my life depressing.

  Annie K.: Hi <mandar>! :)

I was just bored at work here, so I solved #2: it's 140 kmph. That was the easiest question, of course. ;)

  Annie K.: Oh, and the method:

Velocity = V
Time = t
Distance = 2100 = t*V

Also, t*V = (t-5)*(V+70), from which you get the equation

V = 14t-70, so then 2100 = t*(14t-70), which gives the equation

t^2 - 5t - 150 = 0, where the positive value of t is 15.

So it's 15V = 2100, and V = 140.

Oct-31-05  Udit Narayan: Impressive, <Annie K.>!

I wish I was good at maths.
