CHESSGAMES - BEER

[what is this?]

Beer is believed to be over 10,000 years old. Although no one knows its exact origins, some agricultural historians believe that the first beer may have been produced accidentally when a stash of grain was soaked by rain and then warmed by the sun. If this mixture were spontaneously fermented by wild, airborne yeast—which thrives in just these warm, moist conditions—beer would have been produced (Encarta).

Fermented beverages have been preferred over water throughout the ages: they are safer, provide psychotropic effects, and are more nutritious. Some have even said alcohol was the primary agent for the development of Western civilization, since more healthy individuals (even if inebriated much of the time) lived longer and had greater reproductive success. Oct-31-05  BishopofBlunder: <1/2 million teenagers attempts suicide each year and (only) 5000 of them suceeds...> 1%? Man, teenagers today can't do anything right. Back in my day...

<mandar> No offense, but PLEASE don't make us try to THINK on the <Beer> page!

Oct-31-05  chesscrazy: what is this?
Oct-31-05  midknightblue: <Homedepot> sorry about your night out overhearing the women at another table. Maybe you could have bought them a pitcher just as a joke. The cheepest brew, maybe old milwakee or something.

  tpstar: <Anatooly Homedepotov> I have a far different perspective on your story, but I cannot share my thoughts here, and I can't e-mail you for fear of having my brain eaten again. Find me on GameKnot or QueenAlice for my incisive analysis. If you want. =)
Oct-31-05  misguidedaggression: I remember being bullied once in jr. high. The kid would punch me in the back and run. I told the guidance councelor about it, but he did nothing. Then one day the kid made the mistake of hitting me from the front... Now, I'm not saying that taking matters into your own hands is the best solution, but I got a few days vacation from school, and noone bullied me again. (until my freshman year of high school when I decided to insult a few juniors and seniors [repeatedly]. But that's a different story.)
Oct-31-05  aw1988: So you picked your handle out of high school angst, right?

Oct-31-05  Akavall: <misguidedaggression> I agree with your post.

Teachers and guidance councelor are most likely not to do anything.

<I'm not saying that taking matters into your own hands is the best solution, but I got a few days vacation from school, and noone bullied me again.>

IMO, "bullies" are really cowards, who pick on the people who they think can't srike back, but as soon as they see some confrontation they will most likely let go, and go after somebody else. This was the case in my MS and HS for sure.

Nov-01-05  schnarre: I picked my handle from a story character.
<Akavall>I replied to bullying with shock value (bringing weapons to school--noone thought I had any, for instance). My temper, when a long period of angst was contained, was too say the least, fearsome (a fellow 3 times my weight did not wish to test it--he knew I would go for the jugular). <misguidedaggression> These days there is nothing much really a teacher or counselor can do (what else besides the occasional words of comfort, if even that?). So one asks "Should I even bother?"
Nov-01-05  misguidedaggression: I just thought misguidedaggression sounded cool :) It also seemed to sum up my playing style at the time. Though in high school, I admit that I was a bit of a loose cannon.

One good way to deal with a bully is to give him his own page on chessgames.com and watch him squirm as a flamewar breaks out. Not that anyone would ever upload a bunch of substandard games for the sole purpose of creating a focal point for insulting a certain obnoxious kibitzer.

Nov-01-05  misguidedaggression: Unfortunately, bringing weapons to school is a good way to get jail time in the post-Columbine world. Besides, that's fighting cowardice with cowardice. If you're going to do that, you might as well plant the weapons on the bully and try to get him expelled. That's probably safer anyway. I know I'd think nothing of breaking someone's arm if he pulled a gun or knife on me.

I've always considered standing up for yourself (not just physically, either) the best way to deal with bullying. The trick is to realize that the fear of being hurt is a lot worse than actually being hurt. Sometimes a simple confrontation -- even if it does end in fisticuffs -- is a lot less painful than years of humiliation. But you have to make that call yourself.

Nov-01-05  schnarre: True enough! Keep up the good work, eh!?
Nov-01-05  BishopofBlunder: <WannaBe: I picked mine from a life-time of failures....> lol

Ah, the only person on the internet that embraces the truth...

Nov-01-05  mandar: <Annie K.>U are right and u get 5 ponits.i have reduced 2 because u wrote velocity instead of time but velocity is a vector the equation u gave D=v*t has scalar distance on left side but vector on other side. Pls correct me if i am wrong ,if so i give full points to Annie K.
Nov-01-05  mandar: These sums are quiet difficult but not that difficult! 1.A carrom board (4ft x 4ft)has queen in centre .The queen hit by a striker moves to the front edge and rebounds and goes to hole behind the striking line Find the magnitude and the DISPLACEMENT of the queen. a)From the centre of the board
b)From the front edge to the hole
c)From centre to the hole.

2.A boy standing on a long rail road car throws a ball straigth upwards The car is moving on horizontal road with acceleration of 1m/s^2 and projection velocity of the vertical direction is 9.8m/s.How far behind the boy will the ball fall?

  Annie K.: <mandar> I don't care about points, but there is nothing wrong with my solution.

On one side you have Distance, measured in <km>, on the other side you have Velocity, measured in kmph (kilometers per hour) - which is another way of writing <km/h> - multiplied by time <h>, so it's <km = km/h * h>, and you end up with scalar distance on both sides of the equation. And I did not "write velocity instead of time". In multiplication the order of the factors does not matter, so D=t*V is absolutely the same as D=V*t.

Nov-01-05  poktirity: Well mandar I don't know if I've understood the question about the tractor properly but here's my suggested solution:

My interpretion of the question is that the speed V is given by:

V = V(0) -c*sqrt(x) where x is the number of bags and V(0) is the speed "empty" and c is a constant > 0.

The numers give:

8 = 20 - c*sqrt(9) --> c = 4

0 = 20 - 4sqrt(x) --> x = 25

Hence the tractor can obtain >0 speed if the number of bags are 24 or less.

BTW this is my first post since March 31 and I'm glad to see that you're still having pointless discussions on the Beer page :)

Nov-01-05  Anatooly Homedepotov: Such a dry discussion. This is a wet site, remember? <midknightblue> Being Irish like me, I knew you’d offer some good belated advice. Thanks. <WannaBe> lol! I chose my handle using a secret masonic algorithm. <tpstar> Okay, you mystery monger, I will strongly consider privatizing our discussion, since your motives seems to be even more congenial than the last time you tried to get me to join. <misguidedaggression> Bullies that have a pid of their own on this site sometimes get drunk on their delusions of adequacy. So glad (unnamed) is talking to a psychologist about his third degree virtual burns! I kinda like your idea of taking the physical bully on if you’re cornered (depending on if he’s sane and weaker and not on something and doesn’t have a knife or gun, of course), which seems to be less psychically and physically damaging than outright fleeing. BTW, the guy who bullied me got thrashed by a friend.

  TheAlchemist: I've head my more than fair share of embarassing and Murphyesque moments, but here's just the latest:

Every week we have a seminar after practical work. At the end of it, the assistant gives one problem and the first one to solve it correctly gets 1 point. After accumulating 3 points, you get your grade raised by 1.

So, we've had two seminars so far. In the first one, I solved the problem first, but didn't want to present it publically and so another guy answered it, and he was correct (so was I).

At the second one, I again solved the problem first and this time I decided it was my time now. So, I went in front of the class and started reading my answers (there were about 10 questions) and the first one was already incorrect. After an awkward pause, the assistant approached and looked at my sheet and said that since most of the answers were incorrect, I should give someone else a chance. Needless to say, I was totally covered in anger and embarassment, and went back to my seat. After hearing the correct answers presented by someone else, I realized I had misread the instructions and got everything reversed. :-)

  Memorable Quotes: Finally, I have finished Season 2: Game Collection: Punnier Games vol. IV

I am open to suggestions on how to name Season 3. If I'll start creating it, I will need some help, as I am more than a little short of ideas.

I hope you have liked the collections so far.

Nov-01-05  Averageguy: <Bullying discussion> Being able to defend yourself pysically is very good. I have done the martial art Taekwondo for one and a half years now. Luckily, I have never been bullied, but I can definetly take out alot of people should I have too. Takewondo is an art based on kicks, especially flying kicks, so it is a very physically dominated art. One day a guy made the mistake of trying to poke me in the face with a finger, I almost broke his finger and no one tried again.
Nov-02-05  schnarre: <Memorable Quotes> That'll depend on which games you're planning to put in (they have been amusing). Perhaps a collection of games involing those of us on chessgames.com could be implemented (now I KNOW I need a Beer).

<schnarre> I don't think you're in there. Yet. =)

Nov-02-05  schnarre: <tpstar> Alas, my rating wouldn't cut it (especially these days). Would you believe another player dropped their Queen facing my 2...Na6 Sicilian? (the GK #is 3856237 if you'd like to check it out--& groan in disbelief)
