Jan-06-05 | | arifattar: I am sure some of those female GMs won't mind a game of stripchess, considering the clothes they wear anyways. But that said, this page is getting sick. Another round of <Beer;, anyone? |
|
Jan-06-05 | | DanielBryant: <ari>
I'll drink to that. Or I would. If I were old enough to drink in America. |

 | | Annie K.: <But that said, this page is getting sick.> Very interesting... <arifattar>, would you please clarify why this page is "getting" sick just now, in your opinion? It seems you didn't find anything objectionable about it as long as strip chess was suggested only for women players. What's the matter, don't like it when the shoe is on the other foot? :p |
|
Jan-06-05 | | euripides: <annie> Actually arif made his comment immediately after some jokes about two women players (in fact, if there is evidence of anything other than humour in his post, it would be of greater senstitivity towards underclad women than underclad men). If you disapprove of the jokes then I think you should simply say so, rather than making unfair imputations about one particular poster. |

 | | tamar: <Annie K> I don't think we can let greedy sponsors violate the integrity of strip chess. Fifteen articles of clothing to start, with a random strip chess generator determining sequence. Perhaps chessgames.com could put one here on the Beer page. |
|
Jan-06-05
 | | Annie K.: Not too observant, <euripides>. Look at the previous page - Arifattar had posted here after the strip chess comments started, and did not find it necessary to object to them then. I asked him a question, giving him a chance to deny the optics. Nor do I find anything either humorous or sensitive in his post, only holier-than-thou. But I am willing to let him explain what he meant and how he meant it, and I think you would also do better to let him speak for himself. I further recommend, that in the future you pay a bit more attention to who is using smilies in their posts and who isn't, before jumping into the fray. <tamar> Brilliant! :D The room temperature would also have to be carefully controlled, so as to avoid the players going into slaughter mode just because they are too hot (I mean, 15 articles of clothing??? That's a lot, especially if you count the items sold in pairs as 'one'!) And then, as the game progresses, the temperature would have to be raised, so the players won't be forced to agree to a draw or rush the game because they are cold... And what is to be done about early resignations to avoid material loss? ;) |
|
Jan-06-05 | | iron maiden: We'd probably see a lot more helpmates in strip chess. |
|
Jan-06-05 | | euripides: <Annie> actually I don't see a smiley in your post re arif, unless :p is meant as such ( a notation I haven't seen elsewhere); nor do I see a previous post by arif: but I don't claim extraordinary powers of observation. In any case, smileys or no smileys, you were obviously making a point - which anyone, I think, is entitled to reply to. |

 | | Annie K.: <euripides: <actually I don't see a smiley in your post re arif, unless :p is meant as such ( a notation I haven't seen elsewhere); nor do I see a previous post by arif: but I don't claim extraordinary powers of observation.>> <euripides>, First, it seems you are correct as to Arifattar not having made a previous post here; I retract that claim and apologize for it. However, it still stands that this strip chess conversation has been going on for well over a week, and anybody who found it offensive had ample time to express their displeasure; jumping in with a "this page is getting sick" comment, long after it began, but shortly after the suggestion that such games might include male players as well, raises a perfectly valid question as to just what the complainer finds "sick". <In any case, smileys or no smileys, you were obviously making a point -> I have no idea what point you assume I was making; FTR (= for the record), I find the conversation quite fun, as long as anybody can play, and don't particularly appreciate ambiguous prudery with a questionable timing. FYI (= for your information) :p and ;p are "sticking-tongue-out" smileys, commonly used to indicate teasing. Granted, ;p is "friendlier" than :p, but both indicate a lighthearted tone. As for the attitude that "smileys or no smileys" are one and the same, that is simply wrong. The use of smileys arose on the net in response to a real need to indicate the social-emotional nuances that IRL (= in real life) would be conveyed by facial expression and tone of voice. Ignoring them is the online equivalent of autism (no offense intended for autistic persons). <which anyone, I think, is entitled to reply to.> Certainly, anybody can reply to a point. This wasn't a "point"; is was a request for clarification of intent, with some teasing added. A "point" is usually a factual matter, preferably to be addressed by a person in possession of the relevant facts. In this case, even considered as a point, the only person in possession of the relevant information (intent) would be Arifattar; hence my suggestion that you leave it to him. Such things are generally better handled without third party interference, which usually only exacerbates the situation. Not only that, but I have found myself a few times in the past quite discomfited by well-meaning "defenders" who used, in my defense, lines I disagreed with; this puts the "defendant" in a situation where s/he has to maneuver between clarifying what s/he actually meant and avoiding embarrassing the person who was trying to help them. All in all, IME (= in my experience) the best way to deal with this sort of thing is to leave it to the poster involved. |

Jan-07-05 | | Dave Murray: I am pretty sure a lot of people have seen this picture before, but it has to do directly with beer. http://www.compfused.com/directlink...
Can you believe this? |
|
Jan-07-05 | | meloncio: <Dave Murray> I've never seen it before but yes, it's an awful nightmare, though is not one of my favourite brands. |

Jan-07-05 | | poktirity: Poor Beer. |

Jan-07-05 | | Cecil Brown: Whilst we are back on the topic of Beer, I'll celebrate my second birthday here with one (as I won't be reaching 1000 posts anytime soon). Current tipple of choice is:-

 | | cu8sfan: Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday, dear Cecil Brown,
Happy birthday to you!
Here's to you! |
|
Jan-07-05 | | Cecil Brown: Thanks <cu8sfan> :-) And Go Cubs! P.S Who are they and what do they do? ;-) |
|
Jan-07-05 | | iron maiden: <Cecil Brown> Happy birthday. Is it just me or was everybody in the world born in early January? |
|
Jan-07-05 | | arifattar: <Annie K> I think some clarification is required from my side. I have been not very regular in my visits to this site of late. I don't really remember when I last posted before yesterday. Believe me, I went all the way back to the last time I posted on the <Beer; page and read all subsequent posts. Even if there had been no mention of male players, this page was getting sick. I actually wanted to second <acirce> post.
Anyways, I stick to my comments yesterday. It was just an observation. I don't think one can make the same observation for male players. |

this page is home to a lot of sick puppies ;-) |

 | | tpstar: <Cecil Brown> Happy Birthday! You sure know a lot about chess for only being two years old! ;>D (I think we all mean Happy Anniversary!) |
|
Jan-07-05 | | Cecil Brown: <iron maiden>,<tpstar> Thanks guys! Shouldn't really be on the beer at two either :-) |
|
Jan-07-05 | | maoam: <Shouldn't really be on the beer at two either> You should be fine, it's nearly half seven (GMT) after all! ;) |
|
Jan-07-05 | | Cecil Brown: <maoam> Lol! :-)
And since I've just had my brain eaten, I don't need to worry about any harm I might be doing to it (http://kevan.org/brain.cgi?maoam) |
|
Jan-07-05 | | maoam: <And since I've just had my brain eaten> What's all this talk of brain-eating? That's a perfectly innocent link to a non-brain-eating related website I tell you! I urge any concerned kibitzers to click on it immediately to see for themselves... |

Jan-07-05 | | Knight13: "Drinking Problems."
What say that we two, - that's just me and you,
Try something from my wine selection
We'll put out the cat and straight after that
Go searching for vintage perfection !!??
Now I've got me an Imported Merlot
And some Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc
And fit for a spree is this fine Pinot Gris
Or this bottle of Cabernet Franc.
And what would you say, to a cool Chardonnay ?
I suspect you'd smile - and resist ?
For while it may cheer I know that you fear
You'll end up with me,- getting @#$%* !!
But do try some of this Riesling,
It's from an ancient and favoured grape class
But don't overdo it or you're likely to rue it
And even fall flat on your ass !!
Now perhaps before bed, you could try a nice red
Like Syrah or this lusty Cab. Sav.,
But you really should know, they could both make you go And spend much of next day on the lav...! So this drinking has many a problem,
There's troubles with all forms of booze
When you're lying in bed with a thumping great head
It's damn hard to know - what to choose?
