EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Sep-19-12  cro777: GM Alexei Shirov in an interview (in Russian) to Chess News (information-analytical site about chess):

"This was my 10th Olympiad. Torre's record is very distant from me. (До Торре мне очень далеко)".

Sep-19-12  spawn2: <cro77>

Thank you very much. Although its two years away..hope GM Torre will consider a 22nd appearance : )

Sep-19-12  Nf3em: Pwede pa yan!
Sep-20-12  wordfunph: <spawn2: hope GM Torre will consider a 22nd appearance : )>

amen.

Sep-20-12  321ycnay: Pwede! Bakit hinde... He can still kick some... after all these years, pero huwag naman sanang masyadong sagarin sa laro, sa madaming rounds sasalang, kasi napapagod din naman yung tao.
Sep-20-12  wordfunph: <321ycnay> agree, AFGM should be fielded with care sa Olympiad.

go Sir Eugenio "Maong Lang Kumukupas" Torre!

Sep-20-12  321ycnay: Hard to imagine and not to sell 'em elite GM's of yester years short but...

I could hardly imagine GM Eugene's contemporaries duplicating back to back wins against "NOW" players at the cusp of 2700's in GM's Ferenc Berkes and Nigel Short (well)... in the seventh and eight rounds in the olympiade!

Batchmates like Andersson, Ljubojevic, Vaganian, Adorjan, Sax and even former WC Anatoly Karpov! Stellar indeed!

Sep-23-12  pinoymaster77: Good am Guys,

Hope you have a good week ahead!

KL Open and Shell Active Finals completed over the weekend, but somehow the Post Olympiad chess beat is a lot 'tamer'.

Hope some sparks seen soon in the next MAJOR tournets paglaruan ng ating players!

Meantime silip-silip dun sa Bilbao & Brazilian tourneys...

Sep-25-12  pinoymaster77: GM Carlsen ambushed early by GM Caruana in Grand Slam Finals which just started in Sao Paolo... http://www.chessdom.com/grand-slam-...
Sep-26-12  spawn2: good evening pm77,

Although GM Carlsen lost, I still admire his tenacity to extract a full point from GM Caruana. He may have lost this battle but am sure he will win the war later: )

Both Spice Cup and Indon Cup are still two weeks away but I know that the performance of our chess idols will be worth the wait.

Larsen would also occasionally lose one of these, but win numerous others by keeping the heat on, the way Carlsen does.

Give me the enterprising, determined player any day over the one content to play safe.

Sep-26-12  spawn2: <perfidious>

I share your sentiments. They say you cant win em all. In GM Carlsen's case, he may not win all the time but with his talent and perseverance may win most of the time: )

Sep-26-12  Iskubadayb: I missed the first 2 rds of Bilbao. I love this tourney. I had lots of fun with it last year, especially with Vishy's play. Or you might call non-play? Looks like he's up to his old tricks again. I did not see both his draws so I don't know if they were fighting ones this time.

On the other hand, I had a quick replay of MC's game against Caru. The viking was really pushing hard against the mafioso. I think the exchange sac at e4 surprised MC. I'm sure it was on his radar and felt that his position was generally okay but didn't really think that Fab will actually enter the dubious line. The reason I say that is because after the sac, he missed what may look to be a difficult cryptic move Rb2, but for all intents and purposes was really a necessary forced move because it's the only move that prevents Ke3 which gave the Italian the edge that led to the victory. I'm sure he would've easily seen Rb2 if the sac did not rattle him.

Yeah, it's commendable that Carlsen was trying his hardest to get three points from a difficult opposite colored bish endgame, but Caruana also fought hard. The sac at e4 was very courageous. Especially since it really was a dubious sac and could have cost him the game. That was the key in the game. Someone was going to win or lose after that move and the dude with the bigger balls was rewarded! :)

Sep-26-12  spawn2: <Master Isku>

GM Carlsen beat GM Vallejo in Round 2! Bobby Fischer would have been proud of GM Magnus take no prisoner type of play: )

Sep-26-12  Iskubadayb: Of course, I expect Mag to win this version again! I also saw Karjak's games quickly... I don't know what to say. Was his surge a fluke?? Or just badly off-form?? I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Nice to see you, Alexhine. :)

Sep-26-12  spawn2: Same here Master Isku

Kala ko tuluyan ka na lilisan: (

Hintay hintay lang at ipagpapatuloy ang susunod na kabanata ng alamat; )

Sep-26-12  pinoymaster77: Good am,

Caruana notches 2nd win to pace the field. Pero tingin ko Aronian and Carlsen pa din contend diyan in the end...

Sep-26-12  spawn2: Even GM Torre's games in the last Olympiad showed great fighting spirit and willingness to engage much higher rated opponents in a slambang affair.
Sep-27-12  pinoymaster77: All draws in rd3, per S. Polgar eh fighting games naman, Caruana retains the lead as I've checked Levon has 1 win and 2 draws... will watchout Fabiano vs Levon game...
Sep-27-12  pinoymaster77: That's what we're talking about, sa last BOGM5 nga eh mababa pa kaligayahan kahit top 3 to 5 boards eh sana may livegames... pero not sure kung may DGT boards na ang NCFP?

Dito puede ring gawin yan, starting with the Pichay Intl. Kelangan lang ng entrePinoy na marunong sa multi-media apps and may marketing connections...

Eto yung video on rebranding chess, they've started with the recent London tourney... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2Pa...

Sep-27-12  batongol: AFGM's comment on the forthcoming Southeast Asian Games...

http://www.philstar.com/SportsArtic...

Sep-27-12  pinoymaster77: Thanks batongol for sharing that article!

Ayun, ayos GM Torre & chess has the ears of Ka Peping then. Mentioned ang Myanmar chess (may elepante daw), Asean chess (nilaruan ni gmjoey nung 2011 SEAG) and Fischer random, pero di pa daw final, mag-meeting pa ulit...

AFGM also made a similar call early this year, coming on the heels of his coaching stint for the 2011 SEAG and what they had experienced...

Sana, ma-align yung mga local tournaments, even the non-NCFP after ma-finalize yung events. And magka-budget din for training tournaments...

Sep-27-12  pinoymaster77: In the on-going London Grand Prix, after 6 rounds in the field of 12, Gelfand in solo lead with 4pts. noteworthy in rd6 was Wang Hao's win over Naka who's struggling in this tourney
