EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Mar-31-13  pinoymaster77: FINAL ROUND this dawn, so will it be Carlsen or Kramnik as challenger to Anand?!

Malalaman natin by tomorrow early am, both match-ups (Anand vs Carlsen, Anand vs Kramnik) have their own angles and will also be BLOCKBUSTERS! Both sides would have both financial and technical support I think

Apr-01-13  spawn2: Breaking news yung possibility that GM Wes will no longer play for our dearly beloved Pinas and will don the red, white and blue colors.

Hopefully, Ms. Polgar is just pulling our legs since its the first day of April.

Apr-01-13  joeyj: ^^^ April 'fools' day news?

Just imagine Ray Robson going to Myanmar and defaulting his U.S. College Scholarship?

Apr-01-13  joeyj: Additionally,

Pls review too ... USCF rules & eligibility to play in U.S. Championship ???

The news says ...
"According the rules, as a college student, So is eligible to play in the 2014 U.S. Championship and represents team USA in the next Olympiad in Tromsø, Norway."

Hehehe ... i think U.S. citizenship is a must !

Apr-01-13  joeyj: ^^^ See coach Susan update ...

Wesley So

Apr-01-13  pinoymaster77: Looks like both Magnus and Vlad will lose their final round games, watta finish!

Magnus' position seems hopeless, he's about to lose his knight in endgame.

Vlad will try to look for an 'escape'being a pawn down, pero dangerous passed b pawn by Chucky at 6th rank...

Apr-01-13  pinoymaster77: Maybe from fresh retrospect, following 'suggestions' for future Candidates Matches :

- Sometime in between the first and second rounds, have more rest days, maybe 2 to 3 days, for players to somehow re-charge and prepare for the final push.

- Have rest days in the second round after 2 games at a time

- In case there is tie at the top, have a faceoff playoff between the players. Settle it OVER the BOARD

Apr-02-13  spawn2: Kudos to the organizer, the fans and most especially to the players who gave us one hell of a Candidates tournament. I cannot ask for more.

The magnificent 8 just gave us a tournament worth remembering. Years from now London 2013 will be mentioned in the same breath as Avro 1938 in terms of drama and game highlights.

Apr-02-13  pinoymaster77: Nice read, interesting for Champ Anand to be also of the same view its better to have a PLAYOFF match if tied at the top, tama siya wala dun ang attention before the tournament...

http://www.indianexpress.com/news/c...

Apr-02-13  rusticbull: kahit si anand, all praises din sa katatapos lang na candidates tournament

i agree, mas bloody kung patayan hanggang dulo. mas mainman nga kung playoff din if ever merong tied players after the last round

Apr-02-13  pinoymaster77: Magandang match yan : Experience vs Youth, Asia vs Europe, the Tiger from Madras vs the Lion (?) from Norway (may bansag ba kay Magnus na ganun?)

Prediction contest muna, sino mag-host - India, Norway, London, New York? (Thrilla in Manila he he daydreaming...)

Tingin ko di pushover si Anand diyan. Kung hindi man makuha ni Magnus sa first try eh time/youth is on his side and can try again and again...

Apr-10-13  spawn2: Definitely Anand will give Carlsen a very good fight. Sentimental favorite for me is GM Vishy since he is an Asian and started his chess here in the Philippines when his father was assigned to work in the Phlippine National Railway as a consultant.

There were stories about an Indian lad who ran away with the prizes being given away in a chess T.V. program in the late 70's. The host will show a diagram and viewers will have to call and "Guess the Right Move" (also the name of the segment).

While Carlsen is the clear favorite with his stratospheric elo rating and demolition of opposition in a number of very strong tournament (of course the recent Candidates was a close one). Also, he is young and energetic and brings a "new kind of chess".

Apr-11-13  pinoymaster77: Confirmed na ba na Chennai ang host of the World Championship? Or is the Moscow bid being considered?

Factor din ang host / venue though para mas maganda eh dapat sa neutral country ganapin...

Apr-13-13  pinoymaster77: Officially announced na with the press releases on the AIC being staged at the Midas Hotel sponsored by the Pacman for a whopping USD 100K prize pot!

Magdadagsaan ang mga top Masters from Asia nito. Overlapping would also be the the FIDE Trainers Seminar May 20 to 24 also at the Pacman-owned hotel...

Apr-13-13  pinoymaster77: Eto pala yung Philstar article being mentioned dun sa TCU Auditorium nung nag visit me sa Age Group Finals, where may posing sila AFGM and the Pacman! Bongga ang first project ng ETCF ha!

http://www.philstar.com/sports/2013...

Apr-14-13  spawn2: <pm77>

Although ACC is the 1st major project of ETCF, the "1st" project will be done somewhere in Q.C. on the 1st week of May. Will post addtl info once everything is final.

Btw, limited commemorative t-shirts will be made available during the ACC : )

Apr-16-13  TugasKamagong: RIP Robert Eugene Byrne, who died a few days ago. A couple of trivia bits about GM Byrne:

For the 1974 Olympiad in Nice, the USA had its first (and so far its only) chance to field a team with the World Champion on first board. Fischer however made too many demands (including a stipulation that he play in a separate building, just him and his opponent in that place, away from everybody else), and the US instead fielded R. Byrne on Board 1. Speaking to a news reporter, Byrne simplified things a bit and said nothing about Fischer's outrageous demands. In a self-deprecatory manner he merely said "Fischer's asking price was $100,000. Mine was only 20,000. The US Chess Federation immediately snapped up the cheap Mr. Byrne."

At the Olympiad in Nice, Byrne must have followed the performance of the Philippine first board player, IM Eugene Torre. Torre had played well, with wins over Hort, Portisch, Hartson, and Lothar Schmid, and draws with Liberzon, Gligoric, and Korchnoi. With 3 rounds to go, Torre needed only half a point to nail the GM title. In the next round Torre was up against Byrne, who played the French Defense. On the 13th move, a draw was agreed. I can't recall for sure now, but I think it was Byrne who offered the draw. As they shook hands, Byrne said "Congratulations, you're now a Grandmaster."

Apr-16-13  spawn2: Thanks <TK>

Completely forgot the important role GM Byrne played in GM Torre's successful quest for the GM title in Nice Olympiad.

The game was featured in the book "Beyond the 13th Move".

Apr-17-13  pinoymaster77: Shall we start speculating as to who would play in the ACC / Pacquaio Cup organized by the ETCF? It got the chess community abuzz and 'excited' :

- Will the qualifiers like GMs Le,Ngoc,Barbosa etal still play? I think will again need joeyj's inputs on who are the WCC qualifiers so far? (kasama yata GMs Yu and Ding of China?)

- Will GM Wes continue with North America skeds, or revise it?

- Shall we see the likes of other Chinese GMs, GM Kasimdzhanov, Sasikiran,Negi, Meghami, Kazakhs,Uzbeks,Mongolians descending on Midas Hotel like bees to honey...

- Sino sa Pinoy delegation ang magtatayo ng bandila natin to claim those qualifying slots?

Apr-19-13  spawn2: <pm77>

I can only say is that the tournament is still a month away. Hope our local chess players really put their heart and soul in preparing for the ACC.

Medyo tumagilid tayo sa boxing kaya dapat ibangon sa chess: )

Apr-19-13  torrefan: I'm practicing already. I just won a chess tournament. Go to the lobby of the quezon city justice hall building, first floor, and you will see a banner congratulating me for my most recent victory.
Apr-24-13  pinoymaster77: We were at wordfun's highballs last night and opportunity to meet up with chessmates. Engr Vic (wordfun's chess bookish classmate) brought a DVD of 'Fischer Against the World' and it was the chance to watch movie excerpts in between lechon, kambing, grapes & beer.

Irony in Bobby's life from being USA'S hero after being the 'first' modern American chess champion and breaking the Russian chess machinery to be the toast of the town , then in his 2nd encounter vs Spassky getting a brush against the law.

Parallelism can't be helped citing the forthcoming world championship in terms of the 'psy war' in terms of challengers 'demands' or really asking for a 'level playing field'. Ma'am Susan was in the Fischer film for commentaries and the Carlsen camp's views are also being 'aired' in her blog.

Apr-25-13  wordfunph: <PM77> yayyy! :)

thanks to Philippine legend GM Torre who made a call on my special day, arriba AFGM!

<spawn2> salamat pardz :)

Apr-27-13  TugasKamagong: R.I.P. NM Roger Abella, who died the other day at the age of 61.
Apr-27-13  pinoymaster77: While at wordfun's natal bash, nabanggit pa-tournament sa Manila and reconfirmed the date to pulsar, and nakapunta nga siya. Mga 130 players daw, pero since di naka on ang aircon eh sakripisyo sa init sa venue. So literally had to sweat for the prizes.

Pumatak sa 1950 below with 4.5/7 with 2 of those games sana eh 'not losing positions' pero since rapid eh inaccuracy increases pag panic time.

Mas ok na results in past 2 outings, keep it up kasamang pulsar!

May mga tumuloy sana sa ACC for the experience!
