EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Mar-14-14  pinoymaster77: Honga spawn2, tahimik pa sila wordfun ahehe.

After his opening round debacle, GM Levon going hammer and tongs vs Shak, lamang > 1 in all 3 chessdom engines.

The 3 other games are even daw, pero tingin ko lang sa posisyon ni Vlad kayang pigain / gapangin vs Karja.

Mar-14-14  pinoymaster77: Eventful round 2 with 3 decisive games.

Wins by GMs Aronian, Kramnik and Svidler to join Anand with 1 win so far...

Mar-15-14  pinoymaster77: Winning na naman Vishy w/ black, this time vs Shak. Chessdom's engines cannot agree gaano kalaki lamang ni Topa kay Levon

Sayang wala yata sa chessbookie si spawn2...

Mar-15-14  spawn2: If ever GM Anand gets another chance to fight for the crown, I believe we will see a different Vishy.
Mar-17-14  pinoymaster77: Had shared nung unag silip pa lang kanina around 7pm eh surprised draw na agad Vishy vs Vlad. Maybe was expecting more fireworks since before the start of the last championship Anand vs Carlsen, Flad stated in an interview that Anand was 'scared' of Magnus.

The 3 other games seemed even during the opening and early middle game, but Levon started to build up an advantage but Peter has been holding so far. Shak suddenly had huge advantage and on verge of winning vs Andreikin. Draw na Karja vs Topa.

Mar-17-14  pinoymaster77: Andito games analysis and standings, Vlad has tough sked ahead vs Aronian tonight then vs Topa bukas... http://en.chessbase.com/post/candid...

Mar-23-14  spawn2: Anand closing in on a return match with Carlsen.
Mar-23-14  spawn2: I want Vishy to get one last shot against Magnus Carlsen this year. This could be his last hurrah for the WCC. If I read it correctly, after the 2014 Championship, the next one will be in 2016. GM Anand maybe "too old" by then.
Mar-25-14  spawn2: Looks like Kramnik is out of the race. With Aronian drawing against Topalov, Anand inching his way to a rematch with Carlsen.
Mar-26-14  pinoymaster77: 1st sa remaining 4 games na remaining steps, para sa REMATCH !
Mar-26-14  pinoymaster77: Remaining 3 rounds, seems Ex-Champ Anand has it 'in the bag' but still have to play EACH game carefully and respect the opponent.... it could be Vishy's last hurrah na for a shot at redemption :

Mar-27-14  pinoymaster77: Vishy just needs a draw in the penultimate round to clinch being the Challenger again, for his date with destiny ?

Mar-29-14  spawn2: Another crucial round for GM Anand. Tonight maybe the night that he cements his date with..destiny named Carlsen: )
Mar-29-14  spawn2: Anand trying to hold the draw while Levon might be pushing his luck too far..hang on to your seats.
Mar-29-14  spawn2: Looks like Anand will draw but Aronian already went belly-up.

Apr-01-14  pinoymaster77: Di pa nakalista GM Short this time. Sana sa pagkakaalam ko eh may funding ang campaign na eto,at least for our GMs.

In the domestic front, nag start na NCC Elims last night. Its encouraging to see > 100 participants this time for a 5 day tournament,a merry mix of veteran Non-Masters and Ex-NMs, varsity alumni and current varsity, Palaro players (all 4 STCAA HS players were there),Age groupers/Kiddies.

Considering the current issues/concerns with our TOP GMs,was wondering about development /turnover of talents. Well,if we see College varsity players competing and seeing such events as avenue to improve their games, that's good move.

Spotted in Nil's pics was AFGM Torre visiting the PSC venue yesterday and nangungumusta, kumbaga pulso ng chess community...

Apr-03-14  pinoymaster77: Nice piece on Ex-World Champ Anand (now the Challenger) :

http://ibnlive.in.com/news/i-needed...

Apr-04-14  pinoymaster77: Interesting parts in Bobby Ang's Chess Piece on the Carlsen vs Anand rematch : (I was not aware of Vlad's encouragement for Vishy to still try it out)

"It’s official now. India’s Viswanathan Anand will be facing Magnus Carlsen (Norway) in a rematch for the world chess championship in November 2014. There have been no bids so far to host the match, but now that the name of the challenger has been determined I cannot imagine both Chennai (Anand’s hometown) and Tromso, Norway, not coming up with very competitive bids.

Anand played strong and controlled chess and was not in any danger in any game of the tournament. This was really a deserved victory. Magnus Carlsen in his youtube channel made the following comments after the 12th round:

“Overall it’s been an exciting tournament. The quality has been a bit up and down. I think it really shows, in the games of the players, that only first place counts but as I said, that’s no reason to defend poorly and play too desperately [smiles]. I think you need to find a middle ground, find a balance. There’s one player who has managed to do that so far: Anand. That’s why I think he’s going to win.”

Aronian, Kramnik and Svidler played very strong chess in the early part of the tournament and were vying for top honors, but come the second half tiredness became a factor and they all faded."

"I think for Anand the important encounter came in the first round, when he faced and defeated the tournament favorite Levon Aronian. After this loss Aronian had to exert considerable effort to make up for lost ground and in this he was successful and caught up with Anand in the 7th round. All this nervous energy had its toll and Aronian could not sustain his surge in the final rounds."

"Some interesting news. After losing his title to Magnus Carlsen last year Vishy Anand seriously considered taking himself out of the world championship cycle and skipping this Candidates. It was Kramnik who convinced him to give it another shot. This was during the London Classic last December.

What do I think about the Carlsen-Anand rematch? Does Vishy have a chance? Well, at the very least Anand will put up a much better fight than last time, considering that he is taking care of his physical shape. Last year he purchased an apartment in Bad Soden (a popular residential town for commuters working in Frankfurt), Germany and has a daily routine involving swimming, running and biking. He will need this additional stamina when facing the grinder against the 23-year old from Norway."

Apr-04-14  SugarDom: OH C'MON.
I'm tired of all this talk of "big" achievement of Anand in the candidates. He won just 3 games and drew 11 games. This is far from spectacular. This is all hype. And now as per Susan Polgars poll, Anand is even slightly favored against Carlsen.

Trust me, Anand will still get his a$$ handed over come November.
