EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

May-22-14  pinoymaster77: Puede bang parang magkaroon ng parang 'NBA Fantasy game' na ma assess ano probable results ng matchups?

Examples vs US, England, China, Vietnam?

Vs US eh pano kung So vs Nakamura, Barbosa vs Kamsky, Sadorra vs Onischuk, Gomez/Torre vs Robson?

Sa England naman eh I would just to like to see AFGM give Nigel's pompous ass another hit, para matulala na ulit OTB after the game ajeje.

Sa China kaya eh can we improve na over 0.5 pt? May maka draw na kaya sa lower board?

Can we finally win a match over Vietnam in the Olympiad? (at least in recent years eh pagkaalam ko puro tiklop eh)

May-23-14  spawn2: <pinoymaster77>

With regard to the match up with certain teams, a good gauge of possible performance of our team is the elo rating. Team Philippines will always be the underdog against USA, England, China but what is going for us is our abilidad and lakas ng loob. This was proven against England and Hungary which should have clobbered our team to a pulp but were surprised by our fighting spirit.

China has always been a very difficult oppponent for us based on the Olympiad and Asian Games result which if I remember correctly were 3.5 vs 0.5

China's domination only started in the 90's but during the 70's and 80's, we used to beat them regularly.

May-23-14  epistle: Pinoy chessers during the 70's and 80's were much better than those today.
May-23-14  pinoymaster77: Maganda sana ma testing yung hypothesis na yan ni epistle eh,imagine if a team nga of GMs Torre, Antonio, Mascarinas, Bordonada,Maninang,Bernal and many others vs the current young GMs IMs and NMs, aho kaya maging resulta ?

May-24-14  lakers4sho: Can't fault old Nigel, before 2012 Olympiad, his record was 8W 0L 2D, total ownage, Carlsen-Nakamura like.
May-24-14  spawn2: <laker4sho> vs GM Torre? I think GM Eugene was able to score at least 1 win during the Carlsberg Match in the 80's which ended in a tie: )
May-24-14  pinoymaster77: That would be a dream rematch,AFGM being able to make a 22nd appearance and then pitted again vs pompous Nigel.
May-24-14  lakers4sho: Ok, my bad, it's 7-1-2, still pretty bad.
May-24-14  pinoymaster77: Another scorecard we can keep tabs on is the number of Olympiads played.

Isa pang chess story nung time na naging official o Coach si AFGM for PHI in the Olympiad (was that 2010?), eh Nigel when he asked AFGM why he was not playing, and got the reply, eh he retorted aha now I have a chance to break your (AFGM's) Olympiad playing record.

So as players, AFGM has the record so far of 21, while Nigel has what 15 or 16 ?

In terms of continous Olympiad appearance as a player or official, eh AFGM would already have 22, including that 2010 (?) Coaching or Team Captain stint.

perfidious: Such a comparison is hardly fair, for it has proven far more difficult to qualify for the English side than that of the Philippines, quite apart from the age difference.
May-25-14  spawn2: Apat na pung (40) taon na pala ang nakakaraan ng unang umugong sa mundo ng ahedres ang pangalang Eugenio Torre ng Pilipinas.

You have serve your country well GM Torre. Looking forward to your chess exploits in the future whether on or off the board.

May-25-14  pinoymaster77: I have been privileged to be invited to the dinners and get togethers (pati yung sa Olympiad prepa / outing) and tried to attend most of them as much as possible.

From the brief encounters with AFGM, the common factors were :

- The common folks like the waiters and staff in the restaurant and some of the customers recognize AFGM Torre, the living legend.

- AFGM has been very accomodating to the common folk.

- Most if not all of us who are dinner maters become more appreciative of AFGM as a human being.

- My impression is AFGM is feels assured of himself on his place in history, but of course he would still like to cement his legacy via the ETCF, as he approaches probably the twilight of his career in terms of competitive chess in the OPEN category.

- There have been opportunities also specially when he was in previous competitive level (near the top) as shared by wife Marilin, but the eventual decision was to stick it out in the Philippines. This despite having their own daughter based in Alaska.

- More projects via the ETCF in other chess realm, more on helping / catering to the youth, watchout for details at the proper time.

May-25-14  bubuli55: I'm amazed of the accomplishments and dedication GM Eugene Torre has given us Filipinos and our country. It is my hope that he will be part of this team we're sending to Tromso. If not as a player, the least as a coach.

There's that saying .. Records are made to be broken. But first records have to be established. GM Eugene Torre is gunning for a 22nd appearance in the Olympiad. That's very rare for anybody to have an opportunity to do something of such accomplishment especially as a Filipino. This should not be taken lightly because it is after all a world record. An Olympiad record. In the USA, every possible record and accomplishments are pointed out and encouraged because it is a good thing. Athletes are made aware of these records. They are given the opportunities in setting these feats. These are the good stories. People in general love to hear success stories. People are tired reading about killings and tragedies. At least I am.

The team could definitely use GM Torre's experience. The Olympiad is where GM Torre impresses the most in his game consistently. He is like an eagle that spreads its wings wide and strong. The Olympiad is GM Eugene Torre's territory. It's his playground.

GM Torre is a proud man. And he is a fighter. I have heard him say GMs So, Sadorra and Barbosa should be outright included in the team. And the two remaining spots should be contested thru elimination. All players including himself. He has set his mind that he will go thru all that to be with the team. Even with his stature. How can you not have high respect for that man?

With that I wish GM Torre all the luck at BOGM. And I pray that he secure a spot to the Tromso Olympiad.

May-25-14  SugarDom: He should be at Tromso, whether as a player, a coach or even just a consultant.
May-27-14  pinoymaster77: With the latest developments, the 'Young GMs sitout' scenario is becoming more probable by the day. So am going to go out on a limb and share earlier private sharings with a chessmate-friend on the Option B (core are GMs willing to play for PHI).

For the Option B scenario, wishlist 'lineup' is composed of GMs Gomez, Torre,Antonio,Barcenilla and Bitoon. Another variation is give the 5th slot for PSC Youth player like FM Paulo or IM Garcia to start the exposure.

May-27-14  epistle: <pinoymaster77: Maganda sana ma testing yung hypothesis na yan ni epistle eh,imagine if a team nga of GMs Torre, Antonio, Mascarinas, Bordonada,Maninang,Bernal and many others vs the current young GMs IMs and NMs, aho kaya maging resulta ?>

Tinanong mo pa? Siempre, ubosh sila kay Bernal!

May-28-14  pinoymaster77: Ok, wala tayong time machine gaya ng XMen kaya di ma test yan.

Dito na lang sa present time, malapit na din ang NCC Finals by June 19th dapat.

Dyan na malamang ma finalize yung Olympiad team pagkatapos nyan.

May-28-14  joeyj: http://www.philstar.com/sports/2014...
May-28-14  pinoymaster77: Ang pagkaalam ko eh 21st Olympiad playing sa Istanbul, and going for the 22nd. Attached articles search would confirm this.

Mukhang Philstar article following the trail on the earlier PDI article on NCFP seeding GMs Wesley Ino and Oliver, mukhang magkakabiglaan if at least 2 young GMs sit this one out...

http://www.search.ask.com/web?tpid=...

May-28-14  pinoymaster77: Or is it meant dun sa Istanbul eh '21st Olympiad APPEARANCE'?

Appearance means either as player or official?

We'll need spawn2's advice.

May-28-14  spawn2: <pm77>

Yes pards, you are right. If ever, it will be GM Torre's 22nd Olympiad appearance. Naguluhan yata si Mr. Villar.

May-29-14  joeyj: Here's my account on this ...

The Philstar report is inaccurate! AFGM Eugene Torre had already achieved his 21st Olympiad stint in the 40th World Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey (27 August to 10 September 2012).

Pls read hereat: http://chessaccount.wordpress.com/c...

If ever he makes it at Tromso 2014, the 41st World Chess Olympiad, it will already be his 22nd participation and breaking his own record!

May-29-14  pinoymaster77: Ayun nga, as I recalled during the Istanbul Olympiad eh he was being cheered at or had warm greetings, and nung closing ceremonies AFGM was given a STANDING OVATION by the chess community for the said record of 21st Olympiad appearance (as a player).

Magiging 2nd inaccuracy nung Philstar article kunsakali yung sa 2014 Olympiad team composition? Mukhang wala pa silang clue

May-31-14  wordfunph: the ironman of Chess Olympiad --- GM Eugenio O. Torre!

wish ko lang, go for #22!

GM Eugene, hagalpakz ako sa kwento nyo na pabirong sabihin ni GM Short na may plano siyang burahin ang record nyo sa Olimpiada hahaha!
