EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Jul-12-14  pinoymaster77: Yung sa ating Womens team, let us make the CG page of WIM-Elect Janelle Mae Frayna.

Jul-12-14  pinoymaster77: Eto yung article by Philstar's Abac Cordero on ACF's award for AFGM Torre, nagawad eto nung on-going pa BOGM 2014 which the legendary AFGM won, another one after that last 2008 win. This may have made another mark in AFGM's career - that of being the oldest Philippine National Champion, and Olympiad player? Tama ba, chess historians ?

I hope the Patron award also inspires the Pacman to sponsor more chess events !

http://www.philstar.com/sports/2014...

Jul-12-14  torrefan: why do they keep saying it would just be afgm's 21st olympiad in tromso? 21 ba o 22? Is there one appearance in dispute?
Jul-12-14  joeyj: I've wrote about this 01 August 2012

GM Eugene Torre All Set for his 21st Olympiad
by: joeyj : 01 August 2012
http://chessaccount.wordpress.com/c...

Per check with http://www.olimpbase.org/players/k8...

It's now 21st CHESS OLYMPIADS participations for AFGM !

Come 2014 Olympiad ... it will be his 22nd Participations !!!

Jul-12-14  joeyj: ^^^ I think i need to write another one as an update !!! LOL
Jul-12-14  joeyj: Trivia: Chess Olympiad

In 26th Chess Olympiad: Thessaloniki 1984 where PHI placed 16th ... this PHI Olympian was the Team's top points contributor ???

Jul-13-14  pinoymaster77: Di ko pala alam sino ang Team Captain, kung si GM Ino nga, o si AFGM.

As announced, Coach eh Banjo Barcenilla.

Jul-13-14  spawn2: It looks like 2014 will be a good year for GM Torre:

1. Pagpupugay recognition
2. Battle of the GMs Champion
3. ACF award
4. 22nd appearance in Olympiad

As they say, "when it rains, it pours"

Jul-13-14  kardopov: <joeyj: Trivia: Chess Olympiad In 26th Chess Olympiad: Thessaloniki 1984 where PHI placed 16th ... this PHI Olympian was the Team's top points contributor ???> Bernadaybski?
Jul-13-14  kardopov: Renewed vigor in AFGM is very conspicuous. AFGM still sense that so many of his fans are still very much around following his exploits. Self esteem and sense of belonging rubs in Eugene's heart and mind. Go AFGM!

Ang key is to keep all the players fresh, siguro ma distribute yung rounds na mag rest. Important yung last rounds for the final ranking / finish.

Importante yan. May kasabihan... Yu kinat win di Tur di Prans indi pers wik. Bat Yu kin lusit ol indi pers wik.

Jul-13-14  pinoymaster77: Sa Pinas kaya eh may Norwegian Embassy?

Sana ok visas of all our players and officials, pati mga nasa US na sila GMs Ino and Oli, and baka pati WIM Camacho...

http://en.chessbase.com/post/visa-p...

I was just totally numb by the event!

Di pwedeng sabak at ratsada habang nananalo.
Jul-13-14  Albertan: Asian Chess Federation honors Eugene Torre:http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/sports/0...

:)

Jul-14-14  spawn2: Ubosh tayo dyan bro bubz! Pag-uwi mo Karaoke Nights 2 tayo: )
Jul-14-14  pinoymaster77: Aba hirit tayo dyan ahehe, mapapaaga uwi ni Sir bubz nyan, di na every 3 to 4 years pero baka next year na agad?

Saka maghahanda tayo nun ah, naalala ko pa naka veggie sandwich tayo nun, healthy and hearty foods, saka kelangan pala magdala ng mini bag kung masobra sobra ulit.

Ang sakin lang kasi kapag 1st round eh dahil senyor moments eh ang naalaala yung sa 2012 Istanbul eh naalala ko nga pala si AFGM made the trip inspite of Mom's death kaya siguro rest muna. Si IM Dimaks na I believe eh first timer nuon ang fielded sa round 1. Eh nagpapanalo, kaya naka 3 straight games, before losing wildly in round 4. If I recalled right, dun na yata time (rounds 5 to 8) na PHI had a series of surprising results vs higher rated teams eh...

Nung may SHOT maka TOP 10 eh stuck with the ALL GM squad, since 'walang kukurap' na labanan sa last rounds...
