EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Nov-01-14  SugarDom: Since a lot of the top ten players are already qualified by other means in the world cup, WS will qualify in the coming World Cup via ratings. He can also be nominated by FIDE, which i think now he has a very good rapport with since Pichay is at odds with Kirsan. I think Kirsan had a hand with the quick transfer of WS to USCF.

Since, WS is already top ten, he is already in the circle of the elite, federation is irrelevant in this point. Only the grand prix qualifiers will be relevant because now there is no reason for the WS to sit it out. One misconception is that WS sit out the current grand prix, which is simply not true. WS did not qualify for the current grand prix.

Nov-01-14  pinoymaster77: With the latest landscape in Phil chess,
eh nasa US now mga dabarkads GMs Barbosa Paragua and Laylo. Noted na mababa pa din ELO nila Oli and Mac, mukhang sa mga Open kasi o weekend US events, and more sa premyo. Nasa NCFP naman US-based na sila GMs Sadorra,Barcenilla, IM De Guzman. IM Pau is now 19th after the gain in the last World Juniors :

Nov-01-14  pinoymaster77: This is why looking thru the list, and even sa TOP 50 eh sa tingin ko yung mga Tromso Olympians pa din mag figure prominently sa next Olympiad qualifiers, and sana ganapin na eto sa 2015 BOGM with a longer, comprehensive preparation.

OUT na yung dating gawi na just in time, a couple of months before the Olympiad na naman, and at most eh isang tinatawag nang camp na barely for a week.

I alerto na si Iskuba for his training program / regimen.

Nov-01-14  SugarDom: I don't know <pinoy>, i think wala nang mangyayari sa Olympiad team natin...
Nov-01-14  pinoymaster77: Sugar,

May sabbatical na naman yata sa Wes page, dami na naghahanap sayo dun.

Ang importante sa next Olympiad team eh aside from logistical support eh the team eh composed of willing na players, focus on the improvement of the players.

Nov-01-14  SugarDom: Well, the so called "truest" Filipino fans have been calling for the other players as well to transfer to USCF. We are basically hopeless as a people...
Nov-01-14  pinoymaster77: There are still the 3 World U16 teammates of GM Wes here - sila IMs Pascua & Garcia and NM Datu with the former 2 more active internationally.

From the last 2 BOGMs, maybe those with unrealized potential are IM-Elect Abelgas Jr and IMs Pimentel and Salcedo. All 3 are 'tournament savvy'. In the last BOGM, Roel also had to contend with daily commute issues from Cavite, IM Pimentel is still 'school hopping', while IM Salcedo trying to graduate from FEU and might play 1 more time in UAAP daw.

As for the Age groupers, hope highschoolers Jacutina and Samantila get to play in the Dec intl event. And not sure with Gio Mejia and Jerad Docena who may be adjusting with DLSU studies.

Nov-02-14  pinoymaster77: Events to watch out for NCFP players would be GM JP's campaign in the Qatar Masters later this month, and will lookout for the Pinoy entries in the 2 intl events here in Dec.

Tahimik pa on yearend events for chess groups.

Nov-02-14  spawn2: Also interesting eh sinong mga foreign GMs ang darating sa bansa para ichallenge ang mga local chess heroes.
Nov-02-14  Pulo y Gata: That depends on who got tired of previous experiences, especially regarding prizes. If these were Manny Pacquaio tournaments, maybe more would come, knowing that the prizes are secured.
Nov-03-14  pinoymaster77: Nung una pa lang lumabas flyers sa FB groups some weeks ago, asking na kung guaranteed ang prizes. NCFP would do well to make some assurances siguro specially so the sponsors mentioned were Smart for 1 event and Puregold for the other.
Nov-03-14  Nf3em: <Smart for 1 event and Puregold for the other.> there is no problem IMO with regards to these sponsors; problema lang yung papano o kailan mapupunta sa winners kung dadaan pa sa kamay ng mga kung sino ang pera ...

perfidious: A strong player, no doubt; once a candidate, where players with more impressive resumes than he never became one; but when William Hook can play in no less than seventeen Olympiads, this is not the measure of greatness, but of longevity and accident of birth.
Nov-04-14  Pulo y Gata: Happy birthday to the Gentleman of Philippine Chess. Cheers!
Nov-04-14  torrefan: Today the only GM in the Philippines who doesn't drink, smoke, take drugs, eat meat, philander with women, consort with bwitches, gamble, or even swear, celebrates his birthday.

Considering these circumstances, the big question is HOW?

Well, maybe just a quiet dinner of fish and vegetables with spawn2.

Have a wonderful evening, AFGM.

Nov-04-14  dunamisvpm: Happy BEERday AFGM! Mabuhay po kayo!
GOD Bless po
Nov-04-14  spartan1998: Happy birthday po, Sir Euge.
Nov-04-14  pinoymaster77: Speaking of blessings, while driving was tuned in to sports news headlines hourly feature at DZSR Sports radio, and NCFP TD was quoted or guested in PSA Forum, NCFP just received PSC notice that chess is now included as latest priority sports.

But don't get carried away, for such status theyre only hoping for budget increase to 20M (from 15M this year) since as we know there's just limited sports budget pie.

But this could also be the reason why NCFP/PSC was able to send 6 youth players to the Asian Youth event to be staged in India (NM Mejia/Open 18, WNM Enriquez / Girls 18, Vinluan/ Open 16 WFM Shania Mendoza / Girls 16 Jacutina / Open 14 and Bea Mendoza / Girls 14)
