EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Nov-27-14  Pulo y Gata: That's the very thing that was said of him before he bulldozed his way during the Candidates to win the right to challenge Carlsen. Someone has to step up if he does not want to see Carlsen-Anand III.
Nov-27-14  pinoymaster77: bubuli55, Ive been reading about the nationwide protests as offshoot of Ferguson incident, and hopefully the snow and rain is not in your part of Texas.

Happy thanksgiving!

Nov-27-14  pinoymaster77: PYG / Kardz,

Siguro observe pa din elite events na laruan Vishy with the youngsters / 2800 club. Will he also start playing in the World Cup, its not peanuts money and might be worth his time.

;-)

Nov-27-14  kardopov: kardopov: I will not rule out the possibility of another stint and surely a great miracle if it happens. But he will be two years older by then, one of the weakening factor, and have to contend with the surging caruana, the strongest player touted as the worthiest challenger to maggy. Caruana wasn't around during the time anand is buldozing the opposition in the last candidate.
Nov-27-14  kardopov: After the two sound beating from Maggy, I don't think Anand has enough gas left to motivate himself for another fight. If he won't have stellar performance in his future events this coming year, then it is all over for for him.
Nov-27-14  Pulo y Gata: But this was a better performance than their first match! At least he won a game and could have even won another in game 6. God knows what would have happened if he won that pivotal game.

Surely Carlsen is a difficult opponent for him. But we will see. Maybe he could pull off a miracle. Very difficult, but it won't be a miracle otherwise.

But I wonder if this group called BW-GETS has any party before the year ends. I want to attend and meet people. :-)

perfidious: <Pulo y Gata> We would not be speaking of the sixth game if not for the monumental double blunder, for that would have gone down as a prosaic win; at the same time, Carlsen missed a golden chance in the very first game. Hypotheses of what might have been are always possible, if not necessarily fruitful in nature.
Nov-27-14  Nf3em: <But I wonder if this group called BW-GETS has any party before the year ends. I want to attend and meet people. :-)> me too, it's been quite some time already since the last one that I attended ... too bad I'll be there for a very short vacation just before christmas :(
Nov-27-14  Pulo y Gata: <perfidious> You are quite correct, and doubtless arguments and counter-arguments could arise for those who are willing. I was just saying that Anand had a better chance this time than on their first match, and in the scale of importance, game 6 was a definite game-changer. Kramnik, who knows a thing or two about chess match pyschology, had this to say:

<Svidler: How do you recover after such a blunder?

Kramnik: In my experience, you don't!>

IF Carlsen lost that, it surely would have been a big blow to his confidence (the effect to Anand's confidence is, perhaps, inversely proportional). But we can only imagine. :)

Nov-27-14  bubuli55: PM77. Salamat. Ayos lang dito. Medyo tama ang kalamigan.

Salamat din, NF3em :)

perfidious: <Pulo y Gata> You are likely familiar with Fischer's blunder in a simple pawn ending against Letelier, a line easier by far to see than what went in game six recently.

Have you ever played through Redolfi-Fischer played the following round, a weak effort by Black in which his opponent blundered in a won position and handed over a full point? If someone like Fischer could encounter difficulties bouncing back from such an error, might happen to anyone.

Nov-28-14  torrefan: <We would not be speaking of the sixth game if not for the monumental double blunder,>

It was not a double blunder. Carlsen made a move which could have cost him the game. That was a blunder.

Anand didn't see the winning move but he was not necessarily lost after that. So that was only a blinder, not a blunder.

Nov-28-14  SugarDom: I make a lot blinders, but not blunders. har
Nov-28-14  spawn2: One of the most loved PBA player and one of GM Eugene's fellow Pagpupugay awardee, Samboy "Skywalker" Lim was rushed to the hospital last night when he collapsed in an exhibition game.

Let's offer a prayer for his immediate recovery.

Playing in a legends game pala, and he has history of asthma.

Our prayers for Samboy's recovery.

Nov-28-14  pinoymaster77: Dun sa yearenders will watchout for the regular Fiancheto / ETCF event, sana ok sa skeds.
Nov-28-14  spawn2: Tonight, after 50 years, GM Eugene Torre will go back to his alma mater, Cubao Elementary School to deliver a speech to his fellow alumni and guests and pay homage to the school that has been an important part of his growing up years. Congrats!
Nov-29-14  Talimuzakh: <... kadalasan sa puso yan...>

Calling Gilas Pilipinas! Sagad, todamax kayo sa Puso! - Kindly help a fellow in dire need of a heartfelt sharing...Samboy, yoda Man.

Nov-29-14  pinoymaster77: Congrats to AFGM on the golden anniversary with his Elem alma mater !
Nov-29-14  kardopov: The school should be proud of this gentleman. Surely Torre is an icon worth emulating. Congratz to AFGM!
Nov-30-14  pinoymaster77: In talking about various topics with chess friend earlier today, in passing na bring up Samboy, reportedly taking daw fatburners and other supplements. Seems yung fatburners with continued use eh posibleng may epekto sa cardio?

In my case, everything in moderation na since age 45, kahit nga jogging Doc eh may caution, brisk walking na lang daw. No basketball na, limit parties/drinking, once in a while na lang. And of course watch the diet and have regular blood tests taken daw (check cholesterol, sugar and others).

Good sign from this spin.ph article :

http://www.spin.ph/basketball/pba/n...

Dec-01-14  spawn2: 5 days to go and we will see GM Torre in action once again.

A good X'mas gift for the people who are following AFGM's career.
