Feb-27-05  WMD: The man is a legendary party animal:

'Eight years later, at the olympiad in Buenos Aires in 1978, I broke my leg during a party in Heikki's hotel room, which taught me that moderate drinking during a stressful tournament may be alright, but that one shouldn't try to keep up with the Finnish.

'The party went on, while I was lying on the floor, unable to move. One of the merrymakers still had the presence of mind to call the captain of the Dutch team Frans Kuijpers, who had gone to sleep much earlier, but immediately came to rescue me. He knocked at the door and was let in by Heikki, who said: “Of course it is terrible what happened here, but what do you want to drink?” First things first.'

Dec-15-09  whiteshark: "Do chessplayers exist who lose a game without being handicapped by an appointment at the consulate, or by being ill or having dined too heavily the day before? Chessplayers who lose just because their opponent was better? They exist, but they are a rare find."

HeMateMe: "The comparison between a prearranged draw and a crime such as robbery which I just made will seem too harsh to most chess players. I didn't really mean it. There are surely some chess pros who in their whole career have never prearranged a draw – I think <Bobby Fischer > was one of them – but they are a tiny minority, to which I have not the honor to belong."

.....from a recent article by Ree. I'm kind of surprised--collusion is cheating, really, without much to gain by either side. I can see where tournament leaders from the same country might do it, to safeguard prize money in a late round, but Ree makes it sound like all the players are just making a joke of the game.

moronovich: It is a pity as he is one of the best aficinadowriters ever IMO.

Hope everything is fine with him.
Perhaps he will inform us in NIC were he write regularly.

Jan-13-11  Chesschatology: Yes, his book title "the human comedy of chess" says it all. In his writing there is more wit and wisdom than you can find in a hundred other columnists.
Sep-15-11  wordfunph: happy birthday GM Ree!

Was this mystery solved? My first guess would be that GM Ree may have owned the copyright and decided to pull them out to make them part of a new book--so that they would not be available online to everyone for free. Or something like that.

Jun-21-12  achieve: Ree's commentary during tournaments, live, as a guest commentator at tournaments in Holland, was priceless, and far superior to any skilled younger hot shot GM.

He wasn't spouting one line after the other, he paused to think deeply about certain positions, and only spoke when he really had something to say.

If time allowed, he would indeed venture into telling one of his many priceless anecdotes, with a cander and honesty and charm that has yet to be rivaled.

Jul-15-12  achieve: For those interested in the "Hans Ree" pronunciation: I submitted the correct one to CG and you can hear it by clicking the "PRONUNCIATION" button located at the top of the Bio section.
