'.. Für heutige Verhältnisse begann Henryk Dobosz sehr spät mit dem Schach. „Als ich 13 war hatte der Onkel meines besten Schulfreundes uns ein bisschen Schach gezeigt. Das war zwar sehr lustig, aber zunächst noch sehr naiv“ erinnert er sich. „Dann mit 15 begann ich ein Gymnasium im Zentrum der Stadt zu besuchen. In der Nähe befindet sich ein Platz, wo man ständig Dame [draughts], Karten und auch etwas Schach spielt. Es machte viel Spaß, wenn ich irgendwelche Erwachsenen schlagen konnte. “Steil bergauf verlief die weitere Karriere: „Meine größten Erfolge kommen aus der zweiten Hälfte der siebziger Jahre. Damals hatte ich einige Internationale Turniere ganz vorne beenden und sogar gewinnen können. Dafür bekam ich den IM-Titel, noch in der Zeit, in welcher das wirklich ein Kunststück [~ very hard to obtain] war. Mein bestes Turnier war in Teplice 1979, was ich nur hinter Lubomir Ftacnik, Jan Smejkal und Vlastimil Hort, aber [gleichzeitig auch] vor vielen anderen prominenten Großmeistern beenden konnte.“
