Oct-03-13 | | lakers4sho: No offense to Torre, but his recent results show that he is clearly way over the hill now. Just focus on his foundation because I see some promise in that. |
|
Oct-03-13 | | Pulo y Gata: Ok, please post that on his page for best results. |
|
Oct-03-13 | | pinoymaster77: Ayos, nice day for GM Panjol with a couple of wins over young qualifiers NM Reyes and IM Pimentel to UP his total to a whopping 19.5 pts! GM Joey got a draw in rd7 vs GM Mac plus the earlier win over FM Habla for 15pts. GM Barbosa had 2 wins to get to 15pts also. GM Laylo's 2 wins raised him to 13pts, the chase is on! |
|
Oct-03-13 | | pinoymaster77: Yup, why post/comment on AFGM here.
Jury is not yet out, he's a bit rusty from long tournament layoff, he had to sacrifice not to play in the Pacman Cup since ETCF was hosting for first time. This is a 3-tourney swing with the Indonesia Open and Asian Intercities coming soon. And it's AFGM's decision if he still enjoys playing, and he knows when to call it quits. |

<Just focus on his foundation because I see some promise in that> You may want to give some donations, the Foundation will gladly accept it. How about some chessboards and chess clocks we can distribute to the barangays we are planning to visit to conduct chess clinics. Thanks |

Oct-03-13 | | bien pensant: Lakers4show you have no respect for the elderly. Someday you will be 60 too. By the way, does GM Torre drink goat's milk? It helps replenish brain cells, you know. My aging mind became sharper when I shifted to goat's milk from cow's milk. |
|
Oct-03-13 | | lakers4sho: Sorry, I thought I was posting on Torre's page, was on my phone and the updates are on 2 diff pages so I lost track. Look, I admire Torre and I think he was one heck of a player in his prime (too bad the Philippines didn't give 2 @#$%s about him at that time). But I don't think it's unfair to say that his best days are well behind him. Nothing personal, just basing it off of his recent results. Obviously if he still enjoys playing chess then that's his choice, sorry I was misunderstood, but my point was that Philippine chess can use his talents elsewhere where he can be more productive (ie. promoting his foundation). |

Oct-03-13 | | pinoymaster77: vonvon's post in FB :
John Paul Gomez scores back-to-back wins; Frayna stay on top in the Battle of the Grandmaster Manila---Grandmaster John Paul Gomez scored back-to-back wins in the 2013 Battle of the Grandmaster Chess Championships at the Philippine Sports Commission Conference Room, Administration Bldg., Vito Cruz, Manila. His latest victory was against International Master Joel Pimentel late Thursday. Gomez defeated Pimentel in 35 moves of Sicilian defense using the advantageous white pieces in Round 7. The 27-year-old Binan, Laguna native Gomez improved his output for a total of 19.5 points on 6 wins and draw. "Sana mahawakan ko po ang momentum," said Gomez who earlier brought down National Master Narquinden Reyes in the 6th round. The event is using the Torre-Pichay scoring system, a method formulated by Torre and National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) president/chairman Prospero "Butch" Pichay, Jr. where a win is equivalent to three points, a draw is 1.5 points, a loss is zero, and a stalemate is 2.0 for the last player to make a move and 1.0 to the player who can no longer make a move. Meanwhile, overnight solo second place 12-time National Open champion GM Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. still second the field with 16.0 points after beating Fide Master Jony Habla in the sixth round and drew with defending champion GM Mark Paragua in the seventh round after 31 moves of Modern Benoni defense. "Medyo mahirap game namin ni Mark (Paragua) pero ok na ang draw," said Antonio, former top player of University of Manila and mainstay of Philippine Army chess team. At 3rd is GM Oliver Barbosa with 15.0 points. The Taytay, Rizal resident beat GM Richard Bitoon and IM Richilieu Salcedo III, respectively. In other matches saw, GM Darwin Laylo defeated US based GM Rogelio "Banjo" Barcenilla in the 6th round then nipped IM Emmanuel Senador in the 7th round, GM Eugene Torre who lost to Pimentel in the 6th round then drew with Barcenilla in the 7th round while FM Roderick Nava was yielded to Senador in the 6th round then upset GM Richard Bitoon in the 7th round. Habla, meantime split the point with Reyes in the 7th round after losing to Antonio in the 6th round. In the women's play, Woman International Master Janelle Mae Frayna toppled Woman Fide Master Rulp Ylem Jose in the 6th round then split the point with WIM Beverly Mendoza in the 7th round to remain on top with 18.0 points. Mendoza, on the other hand still at solo second place with 16.5 points. Last year's champion WIM Catherine Perena occupied solo third place position with 15.0 points. The University of the Philippines-Diliman campus coach routed Lucelle Bermundo in the 6th round and Ynna Sophia Canape in the 7th round. The tournament is being organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP), headed by chairman/president Prospero “Butch” Pichay Jr. and secretary-general Rep. Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino Jr., and supported by the Philippine Sports Commisison (PSC), headed by chairman Ricardo "Richie" Garcia and the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), at the helm is president Jose "Peping" Cojuangco. NCFP executive director GM Jayson Gonzales is the tournament director, while IA Gene Poliarco is the chief arbiter. |

Oct-04-13 | | pinoymaster77: Good am, meron na ding results for rds 8 and 9 sa NCFP,pero have to check their standings if after round 8 o rd9. Mukhang tama yung kay JP na 22.5 from 6 wins and 3 draws...GM Barbosa 4 wins & 5draws for 19.5, while GM Antonio 3 wins & 6 draws for 18pts... Mukhang bukas ang pivotal day for GM Panjol if 2 rounds, he will face GMs Paragua and Barbosa |
