Nov-01-09 | | rogge: <tpstar>, you're right. We should ban all professional sports, it's bad for kids' education. |
Nov-01-09 | | zarg: <tpstar: I wonder if people really have his best interests at heart, or is it their own interests.> I most certainly have his best interest at heart, and have stated the exact same thing to my own kid. <That is how Academia works.> No, starting studying 1-3 years later, don't make a difference in Norway, what matters, is that <when> you go for it, you do that well. To get a master degree only, will not require something very special and I don't see much problem in being even 5 years late for that. To get a PhD scholarship can be difficult, what matter most is the quality of the graduate work. To really stand out, the student should make a publication in a respectable journal. I've supervised graduate students, who I don't consider being research material, but even so got an A on their thesis. To get a position, it's about your publication list and academic production capacity, and if the competition is hard, the young can't expect getting a position at all. Need to deliver first. |

Nov-01-09 | | pawn to QB4: of course, back in the day Botvinnik and co would have advised him to go for the academic opportunities, not just instead of pursuing a chess career, but because they thought an educated and well-rounded personality made for a stronger player in the long run, and also a happier guy. Bobby Fischer (on the playing strength side) notwithstanding, I think there's probably much to be said for this view. |

Nov-03-09 | | rogge: Hammer in the New York Times:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/01/n... |
Dec-07-09 | | Billy Vaughan: He'll be playing in the open section of the London tournament. Go Hammer! See if you can match Carlsen's performance ;) |
Dec-09-09 | | Billy Vaughan: He won his first game of the Open tournament, but I can't find the game (or even the opponent) on the tournament website, which is justifiably focusing its coverage on the closed event. Best I could find is today's schedule: http://www.londonchessclassic.com/f.... Curiously, GM Conquest <lost> his first game. Somebody caught the Van Wely flu? ;) During tonight's mayhem I took the liberty of editing Hammer's bio to include his ETC performance. |
Dec-09-09 | | soldal: Hammer beat Casiot ENG.

Dec-10-09 | | Billy Vaughan: Thanks.
Hammer's now three for three. Here's hoping he clocks a rating performance even higher than Carlsen's ;) |
Dec-11-09 | | Billy Vaughan: 4/4 and now has his first shot at grandmaster blood; his next game is against English GM Mark Hebden. |
Dec-13-09 | | Billy Vaughan: Drew Hebden and beat Loeffler and now he's sitting at 5.5/6 with a 2771 performance. Granted it's against weaker opposition but still impressive, and higher than anybody besides Carlsen and Kramnik in the main tournament. |
Dec-13-09 | | Appaz: Hammer on a rampage: 6.5/7 now after beating GM Neil McDonald (2412). This should put him well above 2600. |
Dec-13-09 | | Billy Vaughan: His live rating was actually already 2613 after the ETC, so now he's about 2625. |
Dec-13-09 | | Appaz: You don't say? Now that is good news! :)
Time to play more regular with the big boys. Hammer is solid 2700 material. |
Dec-13-09 | | Billy Vaughan: That he is, if he continues performing anywhere near as well as he has the past few months. He's shown he can win against high 2600s and 2700s in the ETC (including a very on-form Eljanov) as well as beat up on the lower 2400s in this tournament. |
Dec-13-09 | | rogge: Hammer's within reach of top 10 on FIDE's juniors list. |
Dec-13-09 | | Billy Vaughan: Suggested photo: http://www.chessbase.com/news/2009/... |

Dec-14-09 | | Fincher: <Billy Vaughan: Suggested photo:> he he!! |
Dec-14-09 | | Fincher: <rogge: Hammer's within reach of top 10 on FIDE's juniors list.> that would be realy great!! |
Dec-14-09 | | GalileoPiccolino: It's Hammer time...playing in the back seat and in the shadows of the other prominent Norwegian chessplayer not named AGDESTEIN, err, CARLSEN. This Kid is a cool dude, for a mere game of chess, some people hate him, calling him a chess bum, whatever,...detractors have all their intriguing, personal, and fanatical reasons to hate.
Don't hate, CONGRATULATE! |
Dec-14-09 | | Fincher: London are not finished...but it could look something like this: TOP 11 Juniors ;)
1 Carlsen NOR 2801 1990
2 Karjakin UKR 2723 1990
3 Lagrave FRA 2718 1990
4 Hao CHN 2708 1989
5 FabianoITA 2652 1992
6 Zhigalko BLR 2646 1989
7 So PHI 2640 1993
8 Andreikin RUS 2636 1990
9 Kuzubov UKR 2634 1990
10 Hammer NOR 2627 1990
11 Nepomniachtchi RUS 2626 1990
i know there are uncalculated changes among top 10 but this was for fun anyway.. |
Dec-14-09 | | Billy Vaughan: Quang Liem Le has gained enough rating points to stay above Hammer. Meanwhile Zhigalko and Hao, born in 1989, are too old to qualify next year. That should leave Hammer at 9th place, provided he goes at least 1.5/2 in the last two rounds. |
Dec-14-09 | | TheGladiatres: Hammer won again today, so 7,5/8 now... |
Dec-14-09 | | EeEk: Well done Hammer! |
Dec-14-09 | | soldal: TPR 2831. |
