Manuel Rivas Pastor grew up in southern Spain, mostly in Seville. From the late 1970s to the early 1990s, he was one of Spain's leading chess players, earning the International Master title in 1980 and that of Grandmaster in 1987. Rivas has competed many times in the finals of the Spanish Chess Championships, winning outright on four occasions: 1978, 1979, 1981 and 1991. His first international success was in 1977, when he shared seventh place in the U20 World Junior Chess Championships in Innsbruck. Rivas achieved another significant result at the turn of 1979 and 1980 in Groningen, where he shared fourth place (with Zurab Azmaiparashvili and Harold James Plaskett) in the European Junior Chess Championship in the same age category.
Rivas has achieved several successes in international chess tournaments, including in Medina del Campo (1980, second place), Torremolinos (1983, first), Isla de Santa Catalina (1987, shared first place), Salamanca (1989, first ex aequo), Albacete (1989, tied for first), Lorca (2005, first), Malaga Open (2006, second place), Almería (2006, second; 2007, first), Ourense (2008, equal second), San Cristóbal de La Laguna (2008, tied for second), Seville (2009, first) and in Paul Keres Memorial Tournament (Vancouver, 2010, equal first).
