MARIE SEBAG
(born Oct-15-1986, 38 years old) France

[what is this?]
Grandmaster and France's top female player.

In 1998 Sebag won the European Youth Chess Championship (girls U12), a feat she repeated in 1999 (girls U14) and in 2002 (girls U16). In 2000 and in 2002, she also became Women's National French Champion. In 2003, she came fourth in the European Women’s Championship in Silivri, Turkey. In 2004, Sebag came equal first with Jolanta Zawadzka in the U18 Girls World Championship in Heraklio, Crete but lost in the tie-break. She contested the FIDE Women's World Championship (2006) and reached the quarter finals, only to bow out when defeated by Svetlana Matveeva in the rapid game tiebreakers.

Sebag was already an IM and a WGM when she scored her second GM norm during the Hogeschool Zeeland Tournament (2007) in Vlissingen in August 2007, where she won a game against former FIDE World Champion Rustam Kasimdzhanov (see Notable Games above). By securing a third norm during the European Individual Championship (Women) (2008) she qualified for the title of Grandmaster in May 2008. In March 2012, she placed 5th at the European Individual Women's Championship (2012) with 7.5/11. Sebag qualified for the FIDE Knock-out Women's World Championship (2012) and defeated Australian IM Irina Berezina, Russian WGM Olga Girya and Russian IM and WGM Alisa Galliamova before losing to former World Champion and Bulgarian GM Antoaneta Stefanova in the tiebreaker of the 4th round.

She has played for the powerful Kydon club as a European Union player.

Sebag's highest standard rating achieved so far was 2537 in March 2013 when she was ranked #8 woman player in the world. Her highest ranking to date was #7 achieved between July 2008 and January 2009, during which period her rating reached 2533.

Oct-12-03  Catholic Bishop: The boys deserves a picture here.
Feb-21-06  Appaz: Sebag is currently doing well at http://www.cappelle-chess.com/

She beat GM Popov (2592) today, has 3,5 of 5 points, and a performance of 2620.

Feb-25-06  Appaz: Sebag scored 5 1/2 of 9 with a TPR of 2539.

Feb-25-06  SickedChess: The trick to beat Popov is to refuse his drawing offers!
Feb-25-06  Appaz: <<SickedChess> The trick to beat Popov is to refuse his drawing offers!> Is he known for early draws, or something? Cg.com had just 10 games of his so I didn't get any particulary impression.
Mar-10-06  Appaz: Woman's WC starts tomorrow, and I officially declare Sebag for one of my favourites for the victory! *fanfare*

Other favourites of mine for victory is Kateryna Lahno and Yelena Dembo, and of course on of the chinese girls (don't be surprised if it's one of the lower ranked ones).

sisyphus: Marie Sebag's rating continues to climb, up to 2479 in April. Today she beat Kazakh GM Murtas Kazhgaleyev (2603) in the French Team Championship.
Aug-09-07  weisyschwarz: And she beat Rustam Kasimdzhanov at the 2007 Hogeschool Zeeland Tournament in Holland.

sisyphus: Marie's rating climbed to 2491 in July. She came equal first (with Bu Xiangzhi) at the Neckar Open, scoring 7.5/9.
Aug-10-07  zluria: Sebag has just won a wonderful game against GM Machal Krasenkow, winning in 30 moves with a nice K-side attack that seemed to come out of nowhere.
Aug-10-07  dx9293: To my recollection, she has always played second or third board for France in the Womens Olympiads. But now, it seems she is racing by Almira!
Aug-10-07  percyblakeney: Very impressive to beat both Kasim and Krasenkow in the Hogeschool Zeeland Tournament (2007).
Aug-19-07  percyblakeney: Sebag keeps playing well, in Ordix Open she has drawn Karjakin and is even with Ivanchuk and Mamedyarov with one round to go.
Aug-20-07  percyblakeney: August has been a good month for Sebag, first she won against world #27 and #48 (and drew Tiviakov) in classical chess, then she finished ahead of Mamedyarov (even with Grischuk and Shirov) in Mainz rapids, after making Karjakin work for the draw. She has now passed 2500 and will surely get the GM title soon.
Sep-07-07  dx9293: <percyblakeney> Sebag is expected to gain 17.7 points on the October list, making her 2509! Other strong women IMs (I'm thinking of Skripchenko and Krush, mostly) get lots of attention, but Marie is now the best and one rarely hears her name.

Krush is playing well and is making progress, no doubt. She is a nice person (and only a few months younger than me!) and I am rooting for her to become GM soon. Skripchenko I only met once and she is nice as well, but I think she gets a lot of attention for non-chess-related reasons!

I hope Sebag gets more attention (I've never met her): for her good chess!

sisyphus: Marie Sebag rises to 2510 in January 2008, but falls two spots to ninth. Xie Jun (2574) reappeared in third place after having been inactive, and Hou Yifan (2527) rebounded to fifth (after playing 67 games).
