Dec-04-09  capatal: <Understanding understanding>

The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here...

But it can never forget, how we misunderstood more than half of, 'all we knew'.

Dec-04-09  Jim Bartle: Naturally, if you keep writing "four score and seven" instead of "87," the world will little note nor long remember.
Dec-04-09  TheFocus: It is a little known fact that Abraham Lincoln played two games against Paul Morphy, winning both brilliantly. Afterwards, Lincoln was known to dance a little jig, get into Paul's face and say, Paul, "I OWN you, little man!!" Morphy then replied, "Owned as in slavery?" Lincoln then stepped on Paul's head and retired from playing chess, saying, "I got a war to win."
Dec-07-09  SamAtoms1980: In the near future, the Chess Informant will announce that the opening <1.f3> is significant enough to have its own code. It will be designated as "F00". You can figure out for yourself what the F stands for.

Of notable interest are the Fool's Gambit (F03, <1.f3 e5 2.g4>), the Fool's Gambit Deferred (F06, <1.f3 e5 2.h3>), and the Hammerschlag Opening (F11, <1.f3 e5 2.Kf2>). (F04 and F05 are reserved for Fool's Gambit Declined defenses.)

(don't even pretend you know what that means)

Dec-08-09  technical draw: In an NBA game between Detroit and Phoenix it was announced that TD would be there to throw some free throws. But they sent a TD impersonator and the fans started booing so the promoters gave out TD t-shirts and a riot ensued because because everyone wanted a t-shirt. I'm glad I wasn't there.
Dec-08-09  Jim Bartle: I this you, TD, or the impersonator?

Dec-08-09  technical draw: <I this you, TD, or the impersonator? >

That's me doing my gorilla act. The impersonator they sent was just a chimp.

Dec-08-09  Jim Bartle: Wouldn't that technically be an imgorillator?
Dec-08-09  technical draw: <Wouldn't that technically be an imgorillator?> No, but maybe a chumpanzee. hahahaha!!

I am mystified that many of the players that play the Fool's Gambit don't realize that 2...Qh4 is mate every time, yet they still play it. I mean, EVERY time.

Also related to this by theme is the so-called (Whirly) Bird's Opening of 1.f4 e6 2.g4 Qh4 mate. Paul Morphy played Bird's Opening against Harry Bird three times and lost all three times in this manner. He then said, "I don't think much of your opening, anyway." Whereupon, Bird replied, "Patzer Paul, you just can't play my opening correctly. Maybe I should give you some opening instruction. By the way, I heard Abe Lincoln owns you."

HeMateMe: Remember when that kid pitched a three-quarter court length ball halftime of a bulls game, made it, and got $1 million bucks? (And a hug from Mr. Jordan.)

The Fool's Gambit is a literal gambit of a whole game. It is typically used at the beginning of a long match, to instill overconfidence in the opponent and cloud his mental processes.
