SERGEI TIVIAKOV
(born Feb-14-1973, 52 years old) Russia (federation/nationality Netherlands)

[what is this?]

IM (1990); GM (1991). Sergei Nikolayevich Tiviakov was born in Krasnodar, Russia on February 14, 1973. He learned to play chess at age 5 and as a junior, won both the U-16 and the U-18 categories of the World Youth Championships. He is currently living in Holland and was part of the Dutch team that took first place in the 15th European Team Championship (2005). Tiviakov turned in many other strong performances in 2005, including 8.5/9 at the Gausdal Classics event and 8/9 in Neiva, Colombia. These victories caused his FIDE rating to increase by nearly 100 points, finally peaking at 2699 on the October list, his career high. In 2006 he won his first Dutch championship with a dominating 9/11 score, finishing a point and a half ahead of Ivan Sokolov. He also won in 2007 and 2018. Tiviakov won the European Individual Championship (2008).

He finished 2011 by coming =2nd at the Groningen Chess Festival (2011) with 6.5/9, and started 2012 by coming =4th in the Tata Steel Group B (2012), with 8/13, these performances being par for his rating. In April, he scored 7.5/9 at the Cuca International Tournament in Luanda, Angola and then followed up with a reasonably solid 5.5/8 in the Nakhchivan Open and followed up with an equally solid 6/7 and equal 2nd placing in the 4th Rheinland-Pfalz Open held in June in Altenkirchen, Germany. He won the 2012 Commonwealth Championship played in Chennai with 9.5/11, came =3rd at the Kolkata Open (2012) and yet still lost 8 rating points for the two events. Won the DYTM Raja Dr. Nazrin Shah Kuala Lumpur Masters 2013 with 9/10. Joint runner-up at the PokerStars IoM Masters (2014). Won the Kavala International Open 2015.

chancho: <OneBadDog> Good to see you posting again. :)
Feb-24-07  SNiraj: Tiviakov is the top seed in the Kolkatta Open. Prior to this, it seems that he has won the Goodricke tournament in the same venue twice!
Mar-07-07  Tomlinsky: <By the way, does this guy ever smile in photos?>

It takes many years of relentless dedication to, in-depth study of and fearless playing with The Scandinavian to acquire and hone a look such as that.

Mar-07-07  elLocoEvans: Tivi is like a sort of James Bond in that pic up there ;) with license to check!

Mar-07-07  hitman84: He looks so still in the pic, I'm beginning to wonder if its a wax model of Tiviakov, like the one..

Mar-07-07  VishyFan: <hitman84: He looks so still in the pic> that's because it is a still photograph.... :D

how're u doin' buddy?

Mar-07-07  hitman84: <VishyFan>Yes I know but its just too still to be real ;) I'm fine.
Apr-20-07  russep: Does anyone know what's the next tournament Tiviakov will be playing in?
Apr-28-07  percyblakeney: Tiviakov was eliminated in the Torre Memorial at the end of last year, when he lost on time with black in this position:

click for larger view

He writes slightly sarcastically about how his draw offer and appeal to the arbiter failed before his time ran out, and points out that he couldn't possible lose even if his pawns and the bishop didn't exist. Tiviakov calls his opponent's (GM Paz) behaviour unethical but understandable considering how also the top players behave these days, with accusations of cheating going in all directions...

May-03-07  russep: Anyone know what's the website for the russian team championship and if you can view the game there??
May-03-07  Resignation Trap: <russep> The official site is http://www.chessliga.ru/article.php... .

You can also follow it here: http://www.chesspro.ru/_events/2007...

Jun-04-07  russep: Does anyone know where I could view the games from the French Team Championship?
Aug-20-07  dx9293: Tiviakov put himself on the map in June 1994 with his victory in the PCA/Intel Grand Prix (held in New York) with 8/11. 70 GMs played in this tournament! Most of the other 12 players either became GMs later or are strong IMs.

2nd-10th? Kamsky, Oll, Ehlvest, Nikolic, Speelman, Smirin, Khalifman, Vaisser, and Adams, each with 7.5. Wow.

Aug-25-07  whiteshark: Have your seen the white king, Sergei ?
http://chesspro.ru/_images/material...
Aug-25-07  Karpova: Maybe he thought it was one of those aliens he once took a photo of in Cairo.
Sep-03-07  notyetagm: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches...: Tiviakov playing the Scandinavian as Black has lost only one(!) game out of 25, and that was to Peter Svidler. No shame in that. :-)
Oct-15-07  Aurora: See the world with Tiviakov!
Feb-07-08  Zygote: Tivjakov is really underperforming in the Moscow Open... he drew 3 GMs weaker than him, and today lost to a weak GM...
May-04-08  Billy Vaughan: Well, he's back with a vengeance.
May-04-08  hitman84: Congratulations to the lean and mean Tiviakov.
May-28-08  mateifl: I like this guy's repertoire :)
