SERGEI TIVIAKOV
(born Feb-14-1973, 52 years old) Russia (federation/nationality Netherlands)

[what is this?]

IM (1990); GM (1991). Sergei Nikolayevich Tiviakov was born in Krasnodar, Russia on February 14, 1973. He learned to play chess at age 5 and as a junior, won both the U-16 and the U-18 categories of the World Youth Championships. He is currently living in Holland and was part of the Dutch team that took first place in the 15th European Team Championship (2005). Tiviakov turned in many other strong performances in 2005, including 8.5/9 at the Gausdal Classics event and 8/9 in Neiva, Colombia. These victories caused his FIDE rating to increase by nearly 100 points, finally peaking at 2699 on the October list, his career high. In 2006 he won his first Dutch championship with a dominating 9/11 score, finishing a point and a half ahead of Ivan Sokolov. He also won in 2007 and 2018. Tiviakov won the European Individual Championship (2008).

He finished 2011 by coming =2nd at the Groningen Chess Festival (2011) with 6.5/9, and started 2012 by coming =4th in the Tata Steel Group B (2012), with 8/13, these performances being par for his rating. In April, he scored 7.5/9 at the Cuca International Tournament in Luanda, Angola and then followed up with a reasonably solid 5.5/8 in the Nakhchivan Open and followed up with an equally solid 6/7 and equal 2nd placing in the 4th Rheinland-Pfalz Open held in June in Altenkirchen, Germany. He won the 2012 Commonwealth Championship played in Chennai with 9.5/11, came =3rd at the Kolkata Open (2012) and yet still lost 8 rating points for the two events. Won the DYTM Raja Dr. Nazrin Shah Kuala Lumpur Masters 2013 with 9/10. Joint runner-up at the PokerStars IoM Masters (2014). Won the Kavala International Open 2015.

Jun-30-08  Augalv: Mangalia Chess Festival With New Scoring System

European Champion Sergei Tiviakov wins with 23 points from 9 rounds

The 2nd Mangalia International Chess Festival, popular "Neptun", took place on June 21-29 at the Romanian Black Sea coast. The tournament was exceptionally strong, with European Champion Sergei Tiviakov as top seeded, but the first thing that catches the wandering journalist's eye is highly unusual scoring system.

Here are the tournament rules: each game bears three points instead of the "normal" one. In case of decisive result, the winner receives three points, the defeated signs zero. But if the game ends in a draw, each player takes one point and then they move in to play Armageddon blitz game (5 minutes for White, 4 for Black + draw odds) for the remaining third point. Thus a game can give 3-0 or 2-1 score. However, in regard with FIDE rating calculations, the usual 1; 0.5; 0 system applies.

This extravagant scoring plan will surely cause lots of discussion, particularly in combination with the issue of Armageddon games, raised after the US Women's Championship tiebreak.

GM Sergei Tiviakov

Final standings:
1. GM Sergei Tiviakov (NED 2635) - 23 points (5 wins) 2. IM Jean-Pierre Le Roux (FRA 2482) - 20 (6)
3-6. GM Erwin L'Ami (NED 2600), GM Viorel Iordachescu (MDA 2584), GM Dmitry Svetushkin (MDA 2568) and IM Gergely Szabo (ROU 2516) - 19 etc

The prices were good, the accommodation cheap, surely worth of trying next year. More information on the tournament website

Sep-21-08  eXodus: Isn't Tiviakov looks a bit like David Hyde Pierce,an US actor?

Look at these pictures, aren't some of these like some Tiviakov's pictures?

<Sergey Tiviakov: “I had no choice but to leave the Championship”>

Sergey Tiviakov: “It’s very normal for a player to miss the closing ceremony. Last week at the Montreal International, a much stronger tournament, both Bacrot and Mazé had left earlier, which was no problem for the organizers.

Tiviakov is expecting guys like those from quebec chess federation to be easy with him and give him a break..

Goin back to tiviakov argument that maze and bacrot was givin a chance by montreal organizer not to attend the opening ceremony.

yes!

tiviakov was right, the game of maze and bluvshtien was played at 12 noon last day of tournament as well as bacrot -kovalyov game when it is suppose to start at 2pm as it was scheduled as posted in the official site, maze versus bluvshtien was an early draw while bacrot-kovalyov was a hard fought draw, i witness it from first move to last move as i hang around the site and i smell something fishy why bacrot-kovalyov/maze bluvhstien game Was played before its proper schedule. Was the tournament game schedule re-arraigned to fit somebodys time? as it happen in montreal where nobody complained, everybody go home happy.

Oct-24-09  PizzaRap: Congratulations Sergei!

Savor the championship while it lasts!

Good luck to other tournaments...

i know you will win!

more scandinavian please!

Oct-27-09  timhortons: the photo of lost emperor is really nice, i got a photo too of GM tiviakov taken last aug 2009.

its nice to see him in person.

Dec-07-09  Billy Vaughan: He'll be in Corus A next year.
Jan-15-10  waustad: <tabanus>Amazing cross table. Only one decisive game and he won it.
Jan-21-10  Billy Vaughan: Unlike his other countrymen, Tiviakov's doing creditably, with one loss to the Shirov bulldozer and draws against some of the other favorites: Ivanchuk, Carlsen, Kramnik, and Karjakin. We'll see if he can pick up a win or two against the weaker opponents.
Jan-24-10  Sem: A really strong player, but watching him roam the Univé tournament hall last year I felt he qualified for a job in the Ministry of Silly Walks.
Jan-29-10  whatthefat: <Sem: A really strong player, but watching him roam the Univé tournament hall last year I felt he qualified for a job in the Ministry of Silly Walks.>

Caught in action:

http://chesspro.ru/_images/material...

Jan-31-10  Sem: <whatthefat> Aha, thanks! Well, what we do not see in this photo is that - somewhat like John Cleese entering his Ministry office -he lets his body (read: stomach) precede his head, which comes a split second behind. Come to think of it, the only one I have ever seen doing something similar was British Foreign Secretary Douglas Hurd, although Hurd's posture was much stiffer. When he rounded a doorway the whole body seemed to suddenly move 90 degrees, taking the head along on its way. I used to wonder whether his policy towards foreigners was similarly rigid.
Jan-31-10  veigaman: This guy seems to be very good person and polite at least it is what i think after reading some of his interviews.
Feb-14-10  wordfunph: happy birthday GM Sergei Tiviakov!
