Jul-01-05 | | iron maiden: It's too bad he couldn't have been invited to Corus A next January in place of one of the usual Dutch players, Sokolov or van Wely. A jump from 72nd to 26th is virtually unheard of. |
Aug-24-05 | | stijn: I think that he's going to be somewhere around 2700 at the next list. |
Sep-09-05 | | azaris: GM Tiviakov has become a proponent of the 3...Qd6 Scandinavian Defense and has played it again in the Dutch Championships against GM Stellwagen. Although I have to say, the positions he keeps getting are not exactly enticing. |
Sep-17-05 | | PhilFeeley: I just read this page today and followed the article by Randi on Tiviakov's photo. Here is his (Randi's) conclusion to the story (the link, in case you miss it: http://www.randi.org/jr/051002.html. The conclusion is way at the bottom). "after all, his is a world of chess, a game world, a rarified and unreal place not related to reality. I can easily understand how he came to these conclusions." Hmmm. I would have thought the man's cultural background (i.e. Russian) would have been sufficient to explain this error. Perhaps we ought to get Randi to apologize to the rest of us chess players out there! |

Jan-02-06
 | | cu8sfan: Now I remember! Assessing the Wijk aan Zee lineup on the Corus Wijk an Zee (2006) page yesterday I wrote about Sergei Tiviakov <Honestly, I don't know this guy except his name>. Yet another funny coincidence. Spooky! (-: <chessgames.com> Why does the URL go like this "/player/sergei_tiviakov.html" instead of like this "/perl/chessplayer?pid=12345"? |
Jan-02-06
 | | chessgames.com: <cu8sfan> Those URLs are aliases for each other. Usually the URLs are presented with the /perl/chessplayer format, but sometimes (like with the Player of the Day) we use the html format. This practice serves multiple purposes, not the least of which is a search engine trick. |

 | | WTHarvey: Here is a little collection of Sergei's OTB winning combos: http://www.wtharvey.com/tivi.html |
Jan-02-06 | | Petrosian63: Tivakov lost a lot of points in the January list. |
Jan-02-06 | | sitzkrieg: <Iron Maiden> :"too bad he couldn't have been invited to Corus A next January in place of one of the usual Dutch players, Sokolov or van Wely. A jump from 72nd to 26th is virtually unheard of." He is invited isnt he!? |
Jan-02-06 | | suenteus po 147: <sitzkrieg> Yes, he has been invited and will participate. |
Jan-02-06 | | BIDMONFA: Sergei Tiviakov TIVIAKOV, Sergei

Jan-24-06 | | Whitehat1963: My hero at Corus 2006. Not! |
Jan-27-06 | | EmperorAtahualpa: Wow, I guess Tiviakov is turning into the new drawmeister! 10 draws so far at the Corus tournament... |
Jan-27-06 | | Petrosian63: Yawn! |
Jan-28-06 | | azaris: After Karjakin, Tiviakov is actually the biggest surprise in Corus 2006. I'd have thought with his boring Alapins as White and Scandinavians as Black he'd taken more beatings, but here his only loss is to Bacrot. Think what you will of so many draws, but surviving with -1 in a field populated with mostly 2700+ players is quite an achievement. |
Jan-29-06 | | EmperorAtahualpa: Very nice picture, <lostemperor>! |
Jan-29-06 | | iron maiden: Quiet but impressive in his return to the top group. With his black win against Kamsky today he was able to finish even. |
Jan-30-06
 | | lostemperor: Thanks <EmperorAtahualpa>. This was an easy picture:) |
Jan-31-06 | | cuendillar: Quote from chessbase, concerning his play in Corus: <Tiviakov continued to make Gandhi look like Ghengis Khan.> |
Feb-04-06 | | DutchDunce: Van Wely had the exact same result at Corus last year - 1 win, 1 loss, all the rest draws. And both VW and Tivvy waited until the final round to chalk up the win. Still no match for Leko's perfecto in Linares. |
Feb-14-06
 | | lostemperor: After I asked him if I can make this picture (as a
"request" from chessgames) he won his only and last round game at Corus A (the next day) and became open blitz tournament winner before Sokolov, Seirawan, Van Wely, Sadler, Kasimdzhanov, Timman among others. Purely coincidence of course:) |
Feb-14-06
 | | offramp: This is one of the few pages on the internet that mentions both Randi and Ghandi. |
Feb-14-06
 | | offramp: BIDMONFA: Sergei Tiviakov, Sergei Tiviakov. |
Feb-17-06 | | babakova: Tiviakov looks as if he wants to kill me in this pic, alas its a good one... |
Mar-31-06 | | SiberianChessFan: I remember seeing a report in an old Soviet newspaper that talked of him as a chess prodigy when he was 9. The interesting thing is that the report mentioned that they had done a story on him a year earlier as a mathematics prodigy. There is a write-up on him at the Corus 2006 page:
