Dec-20-11 | | Birthday Boy: Bogotá 2011 – Frigid and uncaring
When you look at my photo reports sent from all over the world, you might think how nice it is to be a chess-player: You see the world, visit exotic countries and win tournaments. Unfortunately, sometimes it is neither nice nor easy, it is a hard work, and it is not uncommon to have to suffer through very difficult playing conditions. Unfortunately, my last tournament in Bogotá, Colombia, was one of the most deplorable experiences I have ever played in, and my trip there was almost non-stop suffering, despite the lovely city. Playing the black side of an Indian Game (A46), he was beaten in 48 moves after succumbing to heavy queenside pressure on move 32, when he blundered a piece.Tiviakov fought on for a few more moves, but threw in the towel in light of impending heavy material loss. |
|
Mar-20-12 | | shivasuri4: Tiviakov bounced back today by winning against IM Olaf Wegener of SC Hansa Dortmund in a 38 move game of the Amsterdam Variation of the Sicilian.Though Tiviakov was the one under heavy time pressure, Wegener made a number of inaccuracies starting from move 29.Wegener resigned when pawn promotion was imminent. |

|
Feb-14-16 | | diagonal: Tiviakov, the Traveller: Sergei somehow manages to (i) travel to the most exotic places in the world, (ii) win or co-win the open tournaments staged there, and (iii) send the chess community a huge batch of photos he has taken during his stay with illustrated reports from the corresponding events (btw.: there are hundreds of his games, played in swiss system tournaments, missing in the cg. database). Tiviakov is certainly one of the strongest sub-2700 ELO players just one step beyond the very best, mostly a top hundred / ELO 2600+ player since the early 1990s, his peak ranking is no. 14/15 of the world in July - December 1995; a decade later, in October - December 2005, ranked as no. 20, he has been one ELO point away in his career from reaching the (today) notorious 2700 milestone. Sergei Tiviakov, born in Krasnador in 1973, settled to Groningen in 1997.
Member of the Smyslov school. IM since 1990. GM since 1991. Winner of the European Individual Chess Championship in 2008 and always dangerous for anyone.... Happy birthday, Sergei Tiviakov! |

Aug-15-16 | | The Chess Express: Wow, this guy looks like a hitman. |

|
Aug-16-16 | | thegoodanarchist: He is a <chess> hitman, as Adams found out here: Adams vs Tiviakov, 1990 |

Oct-17-18
 | | ketchuplover: On the Ding liren page someone said Tiviakov had a 110 game unbeaten streak |
|
Oct-17-18 | | Billy Vaughan: Here's my attempt to verify Tiviakov's streak.
Tiviakov played in the Olympiad in mid-October of 2004, losing to Vladimir Georgiev in the second to last round. He later lost to Shabalov in the fifth round of the Isle of Man tournament, late September of 2005. Between these times, the only losses that the 2700chess database counts are two to Ivanchuk in the Torre Memorial, which upon further inspection seem to be rapid tiebreak losses (i.e. not classical). Excluding those rapid games, 2700chess lists 96 games. There's reason to think 2700chess is missing some games, though, based on the number of games FIDE's page on Tiviakov says he played. Between the rating periods of Oct-Jan 2005 and Jul-Oct 2005, Tiviakov is listed as playing 120 games. If we subtract the 10 games Tiviakov played at the Olympiad before starting his streak, then add the four games he played before his loss at Isle of Man, we arrive at 114. Give or take some weekend team results, this looks a lot like the 110 unbeaten games Tiviakov claims. I wish someone who has better access to tournament data would look these things up instead of me. Chessbase has talked about long streaks before, and every time they say something like "after publishing this article Tiviakov wrote us claiming to have a streak of 110 games without losing" but they don't use their database to actually check it. |
