chancho: <OneBadDog> Good to see you posting again. :)
Feb-24-07   SNiraj: Tiviakov is the top seed in the Kolkatta Open. Prior to this, it seems that he has won the Goodricke tournament in the same venue twice!

Tomlinsky: <By the way, does this guy ever smile in photos?>

It takes many years of relentless dedication to, in-depth study of and fearless playing with The Scandinavian to acquire and hone a look such as that.

Mar-07-07   elLocoEvans: Tivi is like a sort of James Bond in that pic up there ;) with license to check!

Mar-07-07   hitman84: He looks so still in the pic, I'm beginning to wonder if its a wax model of Tiviakov, like the one..

Mar-07-07   VishyFan: <hitman84: He looks so still in the pic> that's because it is a still photograph.... :D

Mar-07-07   hitman84: <VishyFan>Yes I know but its just too still to be real ;) I'm fine.
Apr-20-07   russep: Does anyone know what's the next tournament Tiviakov will be playing in?

percyblakeney: Tiviakov was eliminated in the Torre Memorial at the end of last year, when he lost on time with black in this position:

click for larger view

He writes slightly sarcastically about how his draw offer and appeal to the arbiter failed before his time ran out, and points out that he couldn't possible lose even if his pawns and the bishop didn't exist. Tiviakov calls his opponent's (GM Paz) behaviour unethical but understandable considering how also the top players behave these days, with accusations of cheating going in all directions...

May-03-07   russep: Anyone know what's the website for the russian team championship and if you can view the game there??

dx9293: Tiviakov put himself on the map in June 1994 with his victory in the PCA/Intel Grand Prix (held in New York) with 8/11. 70 GMs played in this tournament! Most of the other 12 players either became GMs later or are strong IMs.

2nd-10th? Kamsky, Oll, Ehlvest, Nikolic, Speelman, Smirin, Khalifman, Vaisser, and Adams, each with 7.5. Wow.

notyetagm: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches...: Tiviakov playing the Scandinavian as Black has lost only one(!) game out of 25, and that was to Peter Svidler. No shame in that. :-)
Oct-15-07   Aurora: See the world with Tiviakov!
Feb-07-08   Zygote: Tivjakov is really underperforming in the Moscow Open... he drew 3 GMs weaker than him, and today lost to a weak GM...
May-04-08   Billy Vaughan: Well, he's back with a vengeance.
May-04-08   hitman84: Congratulations to the lean and mean Tiviakov.

Jun-30-08   Augalv: Mangalia Chess Festival With New Scoring System

European Champion Sergei Tiviakov wins with 23 points from 9 rounds

The 2nd Mangalia International Chess Festival, popular "Neptun", took place on June 21-29 at the Romanian Black Sea coast. The tournament was exceptionally strong, with European Champion Sergei Tiviakov as top seeded, but the first thing that catches the wandering journalist's eye is highly unusual scoring system.

Here are the tournament rules: each game bears three points instead of the "normal" one. In case of decisive result, the winner receives three points, the defeated signs zero. But if the game ends in a draw, each player takes one point and then they move in to play Armageddon blitz game (5 minutes for White, 4 for Black + draw odds) for the remaining third point. Thus a game can give 3-0 or 2-1 score. However, in regard with FIDE rating calculations, the usual 1; 0.5; 0 system applies.

This extravagant scoring plan will surely cause lots of discussion, particularly in combination with the issue of Armageddon games, raised after the US Women's Championship tiebreak.

GM Sergei Tiviakov

Final standings:
1. GM Sergei Tiviakov (NED 2635) - 23 points (5 wins) 2. IM Jean-Pierre Le Roux (FRA 2482) - 20 (6)
3-6. GM Erwin L'Ami (NED 2600), GM Viorel Iordachescu (MDA 2584), GM Dmitry Svetushkin (MDA 2568) and IM Gergely Szabo (ROU 2516) - 19 etc

The prices were good, the accommodation cheap, surely worth of trying next year. More information on the tournament website

Jul-01-08   ex0duz: Bwahahaha. Nice pic! Sergei is so gangster. LOL

Interesting player though. I like his style.

Jul-01-08   Stonehenge: New glasses wouldn't hurt him though.
Sep-21-08   eXodus: Isn't Tiviakov looks a bit like David Hyde Pierce,an US actor?

Look at these pictures, aren't some of these like some Tiviakov's pictures?
