mahmoudkubba: Does the picture indicates something like the secret personality of Superman or something??
Aug-28-04  DanielBryant: He certainly has a heck of a name.
Aug-28-04  Hanada: Isn't this the guy mentioned in MCO-13 who uses the Grob quite often? Greek nationality I believe, which explains the name. It's Greek to me.

lostemperor: <mahmoudkubba>: from the Greek capital Athens an Olympic gold medal for you for funniest remark on player of the day.

P.S. He is spyderman but don't tell anyone now.

Aug-01-05  SneechLatke: It's always enjoyable to poke fun at a plaid shirt.
Aug-01-05  Rocafella: <SneechLatke> Erm, no its not!:o|
Aug-01-05  SneechLatke: <Rocafella> Quite right! I was only bemoaning the sad plight of those kibitzers on this page previous to myself, whose tastes seem to contain flaw where clothing is concerned
Aug-01-05  Montreal1666: His name sounds like the secret code that opens up a hidden, magical door!!!
Aug-02-05  Rocafella: <SneechLatke> :oD Some people these days, eh?

TheAlchemist: I've also seen the alternative to Spyridon - Spyros. Greek shepherd Spyros Louis won the first marathon of the modern Olympics in 1896 in Athens and was a national hero afterwards. Today even the main stadium in Athens is named after him. I guess that's why the name Spyridon became so popular.
Feb-11-06  viruswitch: Nice try.. but thats not it. Mr Skembris comes from Corfu island. The name Spyridon is extremely common on Corfu. People name their children after the local christian saint Spyridon, a tradition that is still alive on Corfu. Hope this solves the mystery :)).
Aug-06-09  WhiteRook48: Hi, GM
Aug-06-12  Abdel Irada: A Santa Cruz Basmaniac (who plays the Grob against anything) occasionally essays a rather original defense that he ascribes to "St." Skembris: 1. d4, e5?!; 2. dxe5, g5. As bizarre as it looks, it does contain a germ of logic: Black will play to recover the gambit pawn, with White unable to play f4 and inhibited from ♘f3 by the possibility of the ...g4 spike.

perfidious: <Abdel Irada> In 1980, I had my only game with Carl Haessler, and almost fell off my chair when he responded to 1.c4 with ....g5. Does your Basmaniac play this too?
Aug-06-12  Abdel Irada: Actually, 1. ...g5! turns out to be very effective against the English, because the pawn on c4 tends to leave White with rigid pawn structures that form ready targets for Black's hypermodern counterplay. Also, it precludes the development of White's king's bishop on c4, which is otherwise dangerous.

I use this system against my computer (in two-minute games with a 12-second increment), and when the computer runs out of time on move seven or eight, it considers Black to stand better — and, as you know, this is unusual: Generally, computer programs think their position is superior unless and until forced to believe otherwise.

However, only a true Basmaniac plays 1. ...g5? against 1. h4. (He also uses it against 1. d4 in a gambit that I have named the Refuted Variation, since White wins by the simple expedient of taking the pawn and holding it.)

Aug-06-12  nummerzwei: He has a nice endgame column in Rochade Europa, jointly with Bettina Trabert.

perfidious: <Abdel Irada> On reading the last paragraph, I was reminded of my old friend Robert Feldstein.

See the kibitz on that page from 14.8.10 (second paragraph). Only Bob would do something as loco as that! He was a smart guy, but overlooked that little trick.

That game featuring 1.c4 g5 with Haessler was the shortest I've ever won against a player expert level or higher (twelve moves).

Penguincw: Spyridon Skembris is the highest rated Greek player at the Anogia Open (held in Anogia, Greece) entering as the 4th seed, but he was held to a draw in R1 with black.

Penguincw: Spyridon Skembris has a decent tournament at the Anogia Open, finishing in 3rd (4th after tiebreaks) with 6.5/9 (+4,-0,=5). He was undefeated, one of the few players to be so. Another player that was undefeated was Alberto David (the winner), who he held to a draw with black in R8.
Feb-22-16  TheFocus: Happy birthday, GM Spyridon Skembris.

Look at your own profile pic, those eyebrows are suspiciously dark!
