Jun-24-10  Don Cossacks: Just being an American made him popular...
Jun-24-10  Petrosianic: In that case, how come Bush isn't popular?
Dec-28-10  Queen 18: Tal Shaked is born in the United States, and grew up in Tucson. His mother, who does not play chess, didn't push him to play chess, but to play soccer.

Tal met a friend, who was in the chess club, and had to join, so his mother can carpool with his friend's mother to soccer's games. But, Tal started to like to play chess more than to play soccer.

kingfu: It sounds like Master Shaked is Arizonian in nationality.

Computer Science pays a lot better than chess, especially, when Google is about $600 a share.

Dec-29-10  ounos: Hey!! I'm in search quality too! I'll look for his office tomorrow. Nice, now I know with whom to play chess or go!
May-26-11  shalgo: Too bad that the database is missing what is arguably Shaked's most significant game--his win against Morozevich from the penultimate round of the World Junior Championship that helped clinch Shaked's victory:

Jun-13-13  Cemoblanca: Family was definitely a Tal fan! ;)
Sep-19-13  Abdel Irada: Editor's confession: Whenever I see this name, I have to struggle against the temptation to "correct" it, depending on context, to <Tal Shook> or <Tal Shaken>.

(I say this secure in the certainty that a GOTD title will soon be presented using one or the other of these "corrections.") ;-)

{ < You need to use HTML escape sequences > } for the special characters, because the site uses { N } to trigger ♘ and < to trigger text color changes.

perfidious: <he won on tie breaks vs bartlomiej macieja but macieja was better player at the time...>

Which proves absolutely nothing.

Yawn.

Feb-02-21  Granny O Doul: Shaked actually tied with Vigen Mirumian. Macieja was a few places back. Among the other also-rans were Movsesian, Morozevich, and Kasimdzhanov.

Interesting fact--Michael Jackson ( https://www.fanpop.com/clubs/cherl1... ) died the same day as Farrah Fawcett: ( https://www.amazon.com/Charlies-Pro...) .

I realize these links will go stale in time, but memento mori, and sic transit gloria mundi.

Feb-02-21  Caissanist: Another mention of <Stan Vaughan> and the so called <World Chess Federation>? Very cool! Even if Macieja had succeeded in dethroning Vaughn, though, I don't think he would ever have matched Vaughn's magnificent 4415 rating on the WCF list, 1500 points higher than #2 Bobby Fischer.
