Todd Albert Southam was the younger brother of David Southam and an FM who won the 1985 and 1990 Toronto Championships. He won the Canadian Cadet Championship in 1983 with 7.5/9 and repeated the following year with 8.5/9 (conceding a draw to Rehan Huda), then won the Canadian Junior Championship in 1988.

Todd succumbed to what was described at the time as a "brief flu-like illness" - the cause of death was reported to be a mystery to the local medical community in London, Ontario. That's what I heard / read in the months after his death, and I don't know if the exact cause was ever properly determined. Todd was a wonderful person, and his passing at such a young age left the Canadian chess community shocked and saddened.
