Apr-18-06  percyblakeney: Concerning possible betting events, the Sigeman tournament starts in just over a week from now. It is much stronger than Gausdal and has four 2600+ players, Suat Atalik and Jan Timman are highest rated:

Chessgames Bookie: <Sigeman tournament> Looks great. We just opened up the betting. We left the Elo ratings off the player list for this one. ;-)

For this tournament and also Gausdal, we decided to ignore whatever tiebreak system the tournaments employ and simply pay off anybody who is tied for first. E.g., if two players are tied with 7/10 and one is declared first place by tiebreaks, we will pay off tickets for both players who are tied for first. We believe this puts more skill into the prediction game, as tiebreak systems are so unpredictable. Plus, it makes betting on longshots a more attractive proposition.

Apr-19-06  midknightblue: Hello - Can we tally our leader board by absolute value? In that case, I may still have a chance if I can continue to accrue my debts to fatboy.
Apr-19-06  whatthefat: <He is a 2000 rated player.>

And counting down from there now that he's boxing.

lostemperor: I have called my friend and told him about the chess-boxing. He replied: but I'm not that good in blitz.

Hahaha. He isn't a bit worried about the boxing. It's losing a chessgame that scares the hell out of him! (Vegas here we come:)

Apr-20-06  percyblakeney: It looks as if Ulf Andersson has been replaced by "the movie guy" Oleg Romanishin in Gausdal:

Apr-22-06  Joshka: <chessgames Bookie> I know it's way to early, but are you planning on variant betting on the Kramnik-Topalov Match similiar to say the "Super Bowl"? example: First player to move their queen, first player to take the game out of book, first player to sac the exchange, ect. I know these examples might not be interesting for everyone who plays, but I'd be interested to hear from others and yourself what are some good possible variants? Thanks in advance:-)
Apr-22-06  refutor: first player to take the game out of book would be a tough call...just because it hasn't been played before in this database, who's to say it hasn't been played in a correspondence tournament? or some IM tournament in bulgaria where topalov picked up the idea or something

is anyone else missing the chessbookie game since it's taken a one week hiatus since the european championship? i'm totally hooked ;)

Apr-22-06  percyblakeney: <I'd be interested to hear from others and yourself what are some good possible variants>

I have some bad ones :-) First piece to be placed on h5 (f.e. black knight), first piece to come off the board (white d-pawn), last piece to come off the board (black rook), last piece to be moved (black king), last castling move (11th), first check (8th), piece giving first check (white queen), piece giving last check (black pawn), pawn to be furthest advanced and still on the board, or promoted, at the end of the game (black g-pawn)...

Chessgames Bookie: There are many possible proposition bets, or "exotics", and here are just a few of our ideas

- What first move?

- What opening?

- How many moves?

- Who will deliver the first check?

- Who will castle first?

- Long castling?

- Game ends in checkmate?

- Promotion?

- Underpromotion?

One way to implement these bets would be to simply have a betting line on each one. For example, the bet "Long castling?" could have just two options, "Yes" and "No". Many people will bet on "No" to make some easy money, and the gamblers can try betting on "Yes" to hit a longshot. Some propositions, like "Game ends in checkmate" or "Underpromotion" would be such longshots that betting on them probably wouldn't even be worth it, but it might be fun to make a market on the bet just to see how far the odds go.

Apr-23-06  TIMER: After my first three gambles, I was worth 70 chessbucks with 150 tied up in ultimately losing bets on the winner of the European Championship, so I was effectively -80 chessbuck!

So I had to borrow and bet my way back up. I have won chessbucks every time I played since and reached 2500+ ! So never give up...

Apr-23-06  percyblakeney: In the first round in Gausdal Kveinys (2532) lost with white against Dworakowska (2364). Tournament favourites Rozentalis and Kulaots won:

http://www.live.sjakk.net/

Apr-23-06  acirce: <- What opening?>

I like all of the "exotic" suggestions. If nothing else, "what first move" and "number of moves" should be there, but I like the stranger ones too. Maybe "how many moves until a capture?" However, it should be completely unambiguous, in order to avoid fights, endless discussions and bad feelings, and sometimes it's very hard to come to a clear conclusion about what opening it is (unusual move orders, starting out as one opening and transposing to another etc..)

So that particular alternative might not be a good idea to include, unless there is a clear way around the problem.

Chessgames Bookie: We have put up for wagering the top board game, Prathamesh vs Izoria, from tommorrow's second round of the 8th Dubai Open Chess Championship.

Sneaky: If you have bets like "Underpromotion" the odds might go down at 500:1, 1000:1, it would be a real lottery ticket.

That means that if a handful of people wager 10 or 20 chessbucks each on the Underpromotion wager, and they win it, then they will be our winners of this leg.

cu8sfan: For all those betting heavily on Izoria against Prathemesh (2366 Elo): It's not Zviad Izoria, 2647 Elo (http://fide.com/ratings/card.phtml?...) but Ana Izoria, 2167 Elo (http://fide.com/ratings/card.phtml?...).
Apr-24-06  TIMER: <cu8sfan> Not according to this http://schach.wienerzeitung.at/Tnr3...
Apr-24-06  Joshka: <ChessgameBookie> Good suggestions indeed! I like, Who will castle first, Who will deliver the first check, how about Who will play the first game, NOT castling? Underpromotion, who will deliver checkmate first, naw these things will not happen. The chances of one player doing a "Fischer" and running thru the other like a hot knife thru butter 6-0, are greater than someone being mated. These guys always resign before mate is delivered. I do like an idea that they used for the Kramnik-Leko match in 2004. Having them play a blitz game before the match, with a 'secret" square being picked before hand. The first person to land a piece on this square get's white in the first game. These little innovations are creative and don't take away from the big picture. Or maybe have them play a "five minute" Fischer random game at the beginning, with the same "secret" square innovation?
Apr-24-06  percyblakeney: Good try, <cu8sfan> :-)
Apr-24-06  Joshka: <Chessbookie> Allright I have just wagered on the Izoria first game, which one is it? i was assuming it was Zviad!?? if not I would like my wagers refunded, please. I have placed bets on all 3 outcomes as well. Thanks in advance.
