Chessgames Bookie: Sorry about that, we assumed that rounds #2-4 would start at the same time round #1 started.

We issued refunds to 3 players who got small bets in after the game started. I doubt these people were trying to cheat, as the bets came in on all three possibilities: Carlsen, Van Wely, and the draw! Nevertheless, fair is fair, and we aren't obligated to honor bets that slipped in due to a schedule error.

We normally try to close betting 5 minutes before an event starts, the logic being that even if you could see the first couple moves of a game you could learn a lot about how to bet on it. (E.g., if it's a Petroff defense, you bet the draw.)

Apr-29-06  TIMER: It is funny, the odds are getting very short on a draw even though both games so far were decisive in the Carlsen match. But maybe that's just because of a bias in the small sample of people who have voted so far.
Apr-29-06  percyblakeney: Hopefully the odds will change a bit, I have 500 on the draw :-)

Sneaky: As the game goes on, the Bookie keeps collecting his "juice", so that means that the amount of chessbucks in circulation is constantly going down, right?
Apr-30-06  blingice: Not if the it's paying more than it takes, which I think it is.

Sneaky: blingice, that's gibberish but I think I understand you anyhow. The word "loanshark" was missing from your sentence, right?
Apr-30-06  blingice: I suppose (at 2:30 AM). (Jeez, <Sneaky>, go to sleep, it's 3:30...)

cu8sfan: <Chessgames Bookie> I have a question about the Carlsen-van Wely match. On ICC it says <If needed, tiebreak match Monday>. That means there will be no draw result to the match even though there was a bet on it. Or are you just going to ignore the tiebreak match and count the regular four games?
Apr-30-06  TIMER: <blingice>, <Sneaky> For a fixed number of players I think that the amount of chessbucks in circulation can only increase if the borrowing increases faster than total net worth decreases. The only way the total net worth goes up is if more players join, in which case the amount of chessbucks in circulation would naturally increase.

Chessgames Bookie: <cu8sfan> We didn't know that. Assuming that ICC is correct, then we'll have to stick to what we said on the betting page <Magnus Carlsen and Loek Van Wely will play a four game match> and pretend that it's a four-game match even if a tiebreak is necessary. We'll treat it like several other bets we have which say "tiebreak rules will not be used for payoffs."

<the amount of chessbucks in circulation is constantly going down, right?> The loanshark increases the cash supply, as do new players. I would suppose there is a little bit of inflation.

Apr-30-06  you vs yourself: <Chessgames Bookie> Why not open a seperate betting for the tiebreaks? I think some of us at the bottom of the standings need as many chances to bet as possible to get back in the game.

Chessgames Bookie: Sure, if there is a tiebreak game we'll open betting for it. I was just emphasizing that it won't determine the winner of the main betting pool for the event. If it should comes to tiebreaks, then "tie" ticket will win.

From our point of view, as well as the bettors, it's very convenient to bypass the official tiebreak rules whenever possible, as many events offer no clear explanation of tiebreak procedures. We've even seen cases where the tournament organizers were uncertain of their own rules at the end of the event.

Sneaky: Egads! My account balance has taken a big hit! I must try to make some money back on the blitz tiebreaks.

Who was the nutball who slapped 1000 on Van Wely a few minutes ago? Well whoever it was, God bless ya, cuz now I'm going to root for Carlsen all the way to the bank.

Go Magnus!!!

cu8sfan: Wow! Within just an hour or so, odds on the Carlsen-van Wely tie breaks have gone from favoring van Wely, 2100 vs. 700 to Carlsen, 3200 vs. 2100.
