Chessgames Bookie: The Summer Leg has officially begun!

Our first bet is Russia vs China Match: WINNER

We want dearly to have betting on the World Blitz & Rapid Championships but after spending an hour reading the official site http://www.worldchess.kz/en I still have no idea who is actually playing. If anybody can give definitive lists of the participants it would be appreciated.

Jun-30-12  crawfb5: The semi-finals of the WB&R championships are going to be next week, so the finals won't be fully set until then.

Susan Polgar's summary might be easier to follow than the official site:

Chessgames Bookie: Regarding the recent bet Edmonton International Rd 5: Gardner-Kovalyov. We had this bet set to close at 6:00 am USA/Eastern, which we figured is the same as 11:00am Edmonton time. A few large wagers came in at the last minute (5:30am USA/East) on Gardner who ended up winning.

Not accusing anybody of anything, but just to confirm for my boss: these games did in fact begin at 6:00 am USA/Eastern (or later), correct?

Jun-30-12  SetNoEscapeOn: Magnus Carlsen is very close to breaking Kasparov's all time rating record; how about letting us bet on when it will happen? Our choices would be each event he's scheduled to play in the rest of the year (or the current leg) along with "won't happen." Anyway thanks for by far the most entertaining chess "minigame" on the internet.

  Annie K.: <SetNoEscapeOn: <[...] along with "won't happen.">>

Of course he'll break it. And then he'll fix it with duct tape.

Chessgames Bookie: <Diademas: 11:00am Edmonton time should be 1:00pm EST. Not sure where you got your times from...> Oh dear, we confused Canadian time zones with UK time zones. (And on Canada Day, no less!) Anyhow that's good news for my purposes because that means the bets have been closing many hours earlier than necessary and not the other way around.

Also, we think we've got these two bets sorted out enough to offer betting now. The people far down the field are just grouped into "OTHER" (no offense).

World Rapid Championship: WINNER

World Blitz Championship: WINNER

Chessgames Bookie: When it comes to breaking Kasparov's 2851 record, do you think the wager should be for official FIDE published rating lists, or "live rating lists" like www.2700chess.com?
Jul-02-12  I play the Fred: Official list.

  Chessgames Bookie: Agreed.
Jul-02-12  dakgootje: Considering we start each leg with a clean sheet, it would be strange to carry the bet over several legs.

In case the bet ends whenever the leg ends - it might be useful knowing upfront when the leg ends; due to when the new rating lists are published.

Chessgames Bookie: We've decided the solution is to put up a monthly bet, open from say the 1st through the 15th of each month, and then paid off on the 1st of the next month. You'll be able to bet on various ranges of where Magnus' rating may be: 2830-2834, 2835-2839, 2840-2844, etc. The topmost choice will be 2851+ which would represent beating (or at least tying) GK's record.

Now here's the big question: is Magnus actually playing any classical chess this month? If he isn't, the August 1st bet's pointless, but we'll be happy to set one up for September 1st.

Chessgames Bookie: My apologies for making a hash of some of the rapid championship bets. I think I got the blitz and rapid pairings jumbled up.

The wagers World Rapid Championship Rd 3: Jumabayev-Ivanchuk and World Rapid Championship Rd 4: Morozevich-Carlsen have been refunded because there ain't no such pairings.

World Rapid Championship Rd 7: Topalov-Radjabov actually will take place, but not on round 2 like we said. So I switched from round 2 to round 7 and betting has been re-opened.

Plus we've opened up betting on one game per round for tomorrow's action (Rd 8: Carlsen-Mamedyarov, Rd 9: Topalov-Svidler, Rd 10: Gelfand-Grischuk). I hope I got it right this time!

Sneaky: <Now here's the big question: is Magnus actually playing any classical chess this month?> He's a last-minute sign-up for Biel starting Jul 21 and ending sometime in August.

I'm not sure how FIDE will process things like that: day-by-day just like www.2700chess.com, or wait until the event is over?

SwitchingQuylthulg: Does it matter? There will be no official August rating list and <Bookie> said we aren't using live ratings :)

The Chessgames Bookie is always putting little hints like that in the fine-print, and I'm too stupid to cash in on it!

WannaBe: Back'd by whose demand?!?! =)

Alright, I'll put a few CB on it.

Jul-19-12  dakgootje: Pick-3 back?!

Mister Chessbookie, I'd kiss you right on the hat - if I were of the hatkissing inclination.

To celebrate, I shall wager a penny and a bit tomorrow - though not that much that you'll feel the urge to break my hands. Again.

WannaBe: Carlsen and Hao have played twice before, each had white once and won with white.

Hao did it in '03, and Carlsen in '08. This will be their 3rd meeting. :-)
