Jan-02-13  technical draw: <This is the first year since the thing began that I didn't qualify for the championship.>

Don't worry, once I didn't qualify and finished 3rd. So even a non-qualifier can win it.

Chessgames Bookie: OK I have assembled the list of members who have qualified for the Championship Leg. To remind those who don't know: these people start the leg with 10,000 chessbucks and are expected to be the main players in the Winter (Championship) Leg. Everybody else can still play but you'll only start with 1000 chessbucks so you've got a lot of catching up to do.

This list is simply the top-10 finishers of the previous four legs (including last year's championship). Here's what I've got:

4tmac
Annie K.
AsosLight
Barok Espinosa
Beholder
bubuli55
ChessWriter
chuke
crippledpawn
dakgootje
ddaniell

chessgames.com: Oops! For a second I thought the bookie-cheaters were waging an all-out hack attack!

Thanks -- our mistake.

Jan-08-13  technical draw: $20,000 on Carlsen right off the bat. Did 2 players bet it all? Or maybe 4 players bet $5,000? Going for the sure thing, right? Don't be so sure, streaks end.
Jan-08-13  whiteshark: <Chessgames Bookie: <OK I have assembled the list of members who have qualified for the Championship Leg. To remind those who don't know: these people start the leg with 10,000 chessbucks and are expected to be the main players in the Winter (Championship) Leg.>>

Bookie, for non-winners this leg isn't worth playing, it's simply unfair to have them (former leg-winners) starting with 10 grands.

If you want a final separate them.

All I'm asking for is 4 leg starting with 1.000 for non-qualifiers - separated from qualifiers (of the last 4 rounds).

SwitchingQuylthulg: On average, 1 person wins something tangible (a one-year membership) in a typical non-championship leg.

On average, under the current system, 1.25 non-qualifiers per year have made the top ten in the championship legs. Traditionally, making the top ten in the winter leg earns you a one-year membership.

How those numbers translate into the championship leg not being worth playing for non-qualifiers is a complete mystery to me :)

Jan-08-13  whiteshark: Well, I ask for a 4th leg, where all (!) participants have the same starting position.

A separated or integrated "championship", both is o.k. for me.

<Switch> my main point is that the starting conditions for 1/4 seasons are downright ridiculously unfair.

(Did you want to impress or confuse me with your numbers? lol, :D)

Jan-08-13  technical draw: <Bookie, for non-winners this leg isn't worth playing, it's simply unfair to have them (former leg-winners) starting with 10 grands.>

I was a non-winner and I played and won a free year membership. So it was worth it for me.

Jan-08-13  whiteshark: <technical duck> Lucky you!

Starting conditions remain unfair!

Jan-08-13  technical draw: In theory (just like the PGA Masters) only qualifiers should be able to play. So consider being able to play at all as a gift from the Bookie gods.

OhioChessFan: The PGA doesn't have 25% of the season limited to qualifiers. Like <whiteshark> I think the advantage is far too big, and a separated championship would be more reasonable, but them's the rules.

SwitchingQuylthulg: <whiteshark: <Switch> my main point is that the starting conditions for 1/4 seasons are downright ridiculously unfair.>

The chances for any halfway competent player to win something are <better> during the Championship leg than any of the other legs, even if he has not qualified. The increased number of prizes available more than offsets the handicap of starting with less money.

To put it even more simply:

1) To win membership during a regular leg, you'll likely have to get from c$1,000 to around c$15,000-c$25,000.

2) For a non-qualifier to win membership in the Championship leg, he'll likely have to get from c$1,000 to around c$10,000-c$15,000.

3) It's easier to win big money during the Winter Leg since there's more of it moving around.

OhioChessFan: I've mostly ignored the Championship leg in the past since I thought it was too big a hurdle to climb, but I'm giving it a shot this time. Anyway, here we are.

chessgames.com: Some of you make perfectly reasonable points. We can discuss new ways of running the competition when the leg is over, but we can't change the way we run the game at the start if the championship.

<GM Sipke Ernst from Groningen replaces Ni Hua in in the Grandmastergroup B of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament. The GM of China had to withdraw from the tournament due to a serious illness.>

We have refunded all wagers involving Ni Hau and have added Sipke to the Tata Steel: WINNER GROUP B.
