Annie K.: ... But who the hecque is Saint Loius? ;)

SwitchingQuylthulg: Saint Loius (also spelled Lojus) was a probably mythical early 6th century Christian saint supposed to have converted the pagans of southwestern and southern Germany. According to legend, he was a priest who nearly became a bishop; he was selected, and an official document to that effect was composed, but his name was misspelled on it. When the error was discovered, it was held as a sign of God's will that a different priest with a similar name should be appointed bishop instead. The dejected Loius became a missionary to the Alemanni and other Germanic tribes, and never returned; the Vita of Saint Loius states he was fed to a hungry bull and died the death of a martyr, but scholars consider this unlikely.

No mentions of Saint Loius have been found in contemporary sources; all references to him come from much later times. There is also evidence that paganistic rites continued in southern Germany beyond the supposed lifetime of Saint Loius. If he was a real proselytizer, it is likely he worked through subversion and Christian reinterpretation of the original pagan religion, rather than attempts to replace it outright.

His symbols include a half-mitre, a bull and gold coins; he is the patron saint of typographical errors and people who send e-mails to the administrators without receiving a reply. Miracles associated with him include sending e-mails to the administrators and getting answers.

Annie K.: Wow, that's a very impressive and educational essay! =)

I am delighted to see once again that the cg biographies are in the hands of such talented historians. :)

Nov-23-14  bubuli55: < SwitchingQuylthulg > thanks. Interesting. Just wondering. Is Loius the correct spelling or the misspelled one that was submitted? Thx
Nov-23-14  bubuli55: It's mythical
Nov-23-14  bubuli55: probably:)

Penguincw: Kudos to <wordfunph> for "indirectly" predicting how Game 11 would end up. For Carlsen-Anand World Championship Match Sochi 2014 Round 11: Carlsen - Anand, I anticipated the draw option will be split into 45 and under and 46 and over or something, but it wasn't. Sure enough, the game wasn't drawn. There goes my 25 cbs...

And yes, I know, that's nothing.

Nov-23-14  ChessWriter: When does the fall leg end? After the Naka-Aronian match?

Hehe, I wish, but usually it extends into the end of December. Of course, the Bookie can give you a more accurate answer.

Nov-24-14  technical draw: <technical draw: I'm again at the precarious 10th place. There is no where to maneuver. < Moulecules > is attacking from the rear and <dakgootje> seems out of reach. I'm going all in. That's the only way to break out (or go broke).>

It worked. I went all in on Carlsen winning and picked up 6 grand. I'm still not out of danger since 7th place is still precarious. I hope the leg ends soon so I can get 10 grand for the championship round.

Annie K.: Qatar Masters Open 2014 Round 1: Favorites Versus Underdogs - I see Rapport is not playing. Do we count Sargissian instead, or what?
Nov-26-14

chessgames.com: Yes, substitute Sargissian for Rapport if that keeps it to the top 15 seeds. The spirit of the bet remains unchanged.

Penguincw: I'm been betting very small in the ChessBookie game hoping everyone would just fall. It's worked until now...

But if I do put out bets, it'll lose...

I hate inflation...

These games have not been easy to pick, but I'll find something. :)

Dec-03-14  ChessWriter: Eh, please refresh my memory: top 10 or top 12 make the cut?

  moronovich: Hi´<CG Bookie> !

The deadline for betting on the blitztournament is 19.00 CET today as I understand it.But does it not start on Tuesday !?..

SwitchingQuylthulg: <moronovich> http://www.londonchessclassic.com/f... says the blitz tournament will be played today; in any case, betting closing early should not be a problem.

Chessgames Bookie: To make everything clear, the traditional 1, 1/2, 0 scoring will be used for the Tournament Winner of the London Chess Classic.

Good luck!
