May-21-06  themadhair: And the razzie for worst chessbookie performance goes too...... Although it seems that <JOHNNY YORK> doesn't want to give up just yet.
May-21-06  technical draw: I'll take that worst chessbookie performance razzie, please. Man I couldn't pick a winner to save my life. This Vegas King is going back to the ponies and the crap table, it's easier. Chess players are harder to handicap than 3 year olds. Now I owe the Mafia almost $700 and they're looking for me. Gotta head to the bus station and get outta town.
May-21-06  Isolani: <chessbookie> I have a suggestion to slightly alter the game to make finishing as high as possible a little more "sexy". I know that in the first three legs the winners and nine "runner-ups" will play in the final fourth leg for the championship which means up to thirty competitors will duke it out for the ultimate prize, bragging rights of course.

My twist is to reward the candidates by how they placed. In other words the winner of this leg will get an extra $1000 to play around with in the championship leg. The second place person gets $900, the third gets $800, the fourth gets $700 and so on.

After this leg ends this will give the qualifiers further incentive to do well in the next cycles as well. For example if someone places first ($1000), tenth ($100) and eighth ($300) in the three cycles that contestant starts out with $11,400 in the championship leg. Of course those are just monetary examples that I threw out there.

Just like in the NFL, NBA or NHL the teams with the best conference records have home field advantage throughout in the post season as a reward for winning the most games in the regular season.

May-21-06  blingice: Hmm, I made a bit of money in the last round (especially the 121 I bet on the Svidler vs. Kamsky draw). Enough to pay off my 534 Chessbuck loan with 14 remaining...

Chessgames Bookie: <Isolani> That idea was proposed months before this went onine. It was finally rejected because under such a system a serious competitor would be forced to play the game for a solid year. E.g., if you took the summer off, your opponents would gain a big advantage. The way we finally decided on, the current system, has the advantage that once you qualify you have some time to relax before the championship.

A small change is in the works. We're setting it up so that all of the juice actually goes into my chessbuck account. If nothing else, it will be interesting to see how wealthy I become. However, we are also considering the idea that these funds can be used seed the betting on some of the games so that the odds have a starting point to attract bettors. If we decide to do that, we won't start until the next leg.

Here's another idea which we're considering for the next leg: a "salary" which gets paid off in the middle of the leg, of 1000 chessbucks. That way, people who go broke in the middle will have a second chance, and obviously it will stimulate the economy.

TheAlchemist: Kamsky ruined me! I lost more than 1000 chessbucks on Topalov/Anand finishing as the top 2. Damn!
May-21-06  Ziggurat: <Kamsky ruined me! I lost more than 1000 chessbucks on Topalov/Anand finishing as the top 2. Damn!> Me too. I had bet on various configurations of top-2 players, none of them involving Kamsky.

Glad you can pay back your loan. That loanshark looks pretty nasty, I would not want to cross him.

:-)

May-21-06  blingice: I hope to be able to buy that chess set from him one day.
May-21-06  TIMER: Whoever is doing badly should take inspiration from my story: I was outright last with -3200 two days ago, now I am back up to +2700, about 6000 higher. You can get a long way from 100 bucks loan from the loanshark, so never give up!
May-21-06  DCP23: Why don't we have betting on the results of the individual matches of the Olympiad, as well as individual games?
May-21-06  TIMER: <Chessgames Bookie> When will be the next event to bet on? Is there going to be anything tommorrow? Next week?

May-21-06  Edwin Meyer: I can't make use of the loanshark. What are the intervals for when you have borrowed a 100, lost it and want to borrow another 100?
May-21-06  Edwin Meyer: Note, i borrowed and lost a 100 a day ago.
May-21-06  Edwin Meyer: It does make use of intervals (time), right? Because it happened before that i had to wait to make use of the loanshark again, but this time it is taking awfull long.
