Jun-05-06  notyetagm: Damn, I put 200 chessbucks on China to win Gold and they take Silver.
Jun-07-06  soughzin: Well, yes you make a large bet and the odds change, but you are still locked in at your odds. It's just my preference;obviously many enjoy the system as it is.

WannaBe: <soughzin> I do not believe you are locked in at your odds. It is locked only after betting have stopped.
Jun-07-06  soughzin: I should have clarified. I mean if one places a bet on,say,a tennis match in a traditional format those odds are locked even if the line changes later.
Jun-08-06  Joshka: <soughzin> I think you're talking about when betting on a game like tennis, football, you ARE locked, cause you're probably betting with a street bookie. But any legal gambling I believe the odds are always jumping around when folks load up. Maybe some expert gamblers can share with us what happens. Say I'm at a horse track, and I like a horse that is say 3-1 or greater and I load up and bet 50 grand, I think the odds get dropped?

WannaBe: <Joshka> In your example, to say the 'odds dropped' is somewhat correct.

In a 'mutual' betting environment, (horses, and chess bookie game) the total amount wagered by everyone are then split back to the winner(s).

The morning lines in/at a track is never really dead on. Because of late money that can influence the final pay-out amount. As in your example.

Boxing, hockey, baseball, basketball, football, you're locked in at your odd(s). It may change later but you still get paid at what're locked in as.

Jun-08-06  soughzin: My friend dabbled in online gambling on basketball, baseball, american football, tennis, autoracing, olympic events and cycling and it was all locked so that's where all my knowledge comes from. BTW he ended up losing a hefty chunk of change so I really don't recommend real gambling to anyone.
Jun-08-06  TrueBlue: just curious, will there be prizes for the winner of each leg, like free membership to CG.com?
Jun-09-06  Elixir of Life: Can anyone tell me how the locked odds system works?
Jun-09-06  Stevens: I agree with <soughzin>. It's something that i pointed out before and that's why i dont play the chessgames bookie game. I normal betting, if you bet on something that is 3-1 AT THE TIME YOU PLACED YOUR BET then if you win you get a 3-1 payout. With this system, you see something for 10-1, think "oh thats a good price, i'll have a piece of that" only to discover that actually the odds could be anything come payout time. Defeats the object of betting for me but others don't seem to mind. If i place a bet on something when it's 10-1, i want a 10-1 payout if it comes home!!

Chessgames Bookie: <Can anyone tell me how the locked odds system works?> There are two models, the bookmaker model and the modern "betting market" model.

The old-fashioned bookmaker model involves a bookie who decides what fair odds would be, and offers them to his clientele. As money starts to line up on different sides of the proposition, he figures out where his liabilities are, and then adjusts his odds to encourage betting that would eliminate his liabilities. When the Bookie doesn't care who wins an event (he makes profit on every possible outcome) he is said to have a "green book." Sometimes the bookie will even place a bet himself with another bookie, or a large professional sportsbook, to ensure that he has a green book.

The betting market model is designed to make old fashioned bookmakers obsolete. It allows gamblers to enter offers for bets at whatever odds they want. If two offers match-up by odds, they are executed, however there is no guarantee that your order is filled for the full amount. For example take tomorrow's match Magistral Ciudad de Leon: Topalov vs Vallejo Match. Suppose one guy wants to bet 1000 on Topalov and only wants 1200 if he wins. That means he's giving 5:1 odds to the Vallejo bettors. Somebody else wants to bet 100 on Vallejo and he wants to receive 5:1 odds. The two offers are matched up by the computer. In this example, the Vallejo better gets his entire bet filled but the Topalov bettor only gets half of his order filled, and the other 500 remains on the board until somebody bites.

Finally we have the model we use, the parimutuel model. It has many advantages for our purposes: the odds are dictated by the bettors, there is no need for me to do much work at all other than answering questions and entering the propositions, it's highly automated, and it works for almost any number of participants. Those who like fixed-odds can still experience that under the parimutuel model, simply by placing their bets at the last minute.

Jun-09-06  technical draw: Wow, I just bet 100 on Vallejo and the projected payout is 666!. Is that an omen or what?

Administrator: Betting is open on tommorrow's rapid match between FIDE world champion Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria and the world's number 2 rated player, grandmaster Viswanathan Anand of India.

Magistral Ciudad de Leon: Anand vs Topalov Match

Jun-10-06  Chess Classics: <The match will consist of 4 games with a time limit of 20 minutes per game with an increment of 10 seconds per move. In case of a tie the winner will be determined by blitz games (5 minutes per <<<move>>>).>

Interesting time control =)

CC

Jun-10-06  TrueBlue: technical draw, didn't you learn not to bet against Topalov !?!?!? I guess some people never learn :) O well ...
Jun-11-06  Raskolnikov: Some people (not me) put some chessbucks on Topalov-Paco in Perfecta Leon. If they only knew that they meet in semifinals, these people wont do it... Shouldn´t they become their chessbucks back?
Jun-11-06  refutor: is this the last event of the first leg?
Jun-11-06  Chess Classics: <Raskolnikov: Some people (not me) put some chessbucks on Topalov-Paco in Perfecta Leon. If they only knew that they meet in semifinals, these people wont do it... Shouldn´t they become their chessbucks back?> Good point! I have to agree with Raskolnikov on this one. They should get a refund.

CC

Jun-11-06  technical draw: <TrueBlue> You're right I got carried away with the 666. And guess what? I dropped from lucky 7 to unlucky 13...Yipes...
Jun-11-06  TrueBlue: it would be nice if they gave some prizes to the winners of each leg, but I don't believe they will :)

technical, didn't you know that 666 was unlucky number ? lol!

Jun-11-06  EmperorAtahualpa: <Chessgames Bookie> I suspect I've found another case of foul play:

User: I AM KYENNY

User: HEY IM KYENNY

Both of the above users are participating in the Chessbookie game!

TheAlchemist: They both have 1829 chessbucks, so I would say they both made the same bets
Jun-11-06  jokinas: <TrueBlue> Congrats on winning the Spring leg!
Jun-11-06  TrueBlue: thanks jokinas. You are very good. Not that easy making money in this game :)

As luck would have it, Topalov played Vallejo in the semifinals making a Topalov-Vallejo ticket impossible, but under a different set of circumstances it might have been Topalov playing Vallejo in the finals. This is not a refund situation.
