Sep-14-06  refutor: i have no worries sneaky...i bet on "other" for the EU championship. short has run out of gas, and look how many "others" are tied for first in the EU. i'm on odds of 11:1 for that, so even if it's a four way tie for first, and two of them are "other", i still get 5.5:1.

Sneaky: In that case, refutor, you're golden! I also have money on that 'other' ticket but not enough to break me if I'm wrong.

Sneaky: <Ok thank you. Are there any events planned already that end before the 19th? (Other than individual games)> There's betting on the Arno Nickel move.
Sep-15-06  Touch of Knight: soughzin, refutor and chekmanirov, currently no. 8, 9 and 10 on the leaderboard need to be challenged. I've put all my 3310 chessbucks on Arno Nickel playing 7...g6 in a brave attempt to make it to the top 10 before the summer leg ends. chekmanirov, do you listen, maybe you should make a move not to drop out of top 10!

lostemperor: I forgot yesterday's ninth round bettings of the EC ch sh! How can I forget round 9 of the EU Ch sh??
Sep-15-06  Touch of Knight: <lostemperor> Hopefully you didn't forget the 10th round! I can see you are very close to the top 10 now. Maybe you too should try the Arno Nickel game?
Sep-15-06  soughzin: hehe yeah I knew I wasn't safe since everyone many will take some desperado shots and enough will hit to make me 14th or something. hmmm what now... Maybe I'll put 5000 on g6 just to make sure I beat Touch of Knight! [not really ; ) ]

lostemperor: I didn't forget round 10. $150 on Short and $100 on the draw. It was long but it was Short!

I will definitely bet on the Arno Nickelgame if only I knew what he will move! :)

Sep-15-06  TrueBlue: Nf6 seems most likely based on recent history. I believe this is the most recent theory for this position.

lostemperor: I thought that game was out of theory?
Sep-15-06  TrueBlue: it depends on what you mean by theory, I believe there are about 300 games in the opening explorer with this openeing. In more recent games GMs have tried Nf6.
Sep-15-06  TrueBlue: I know I shouldn't have been playing after winning the first leg, but I just coudn't resist :)
Sep-15-06  soughzin: dang im 12th now, need at least one more arno move to have a shot.
Sep-15-06  Youjoin: <soughzin> Me too. I´m 15th. I´ll suicide my bucks in everything, like 8...Ke2??.
Sep-15-06  NakoSonorense: This is a stupid game...
Sep-15-06  Youjoin: So don´t play it.
Sep-15-06  refutor: d'oh!

that's what i get for announcing my master plan beforehand ;) who would have thought that nigel would have been the only person to win

i was really hoping to be top 10 so i could make idiotic bets next round like bet all my money on topalov getting the first check v. kramnik...

oh well

Sneaky: There's an interesting situation with the Arno Nickel move. If he doesn't move by 2:00pm tomorrow it will be the first time he's taken an extra day, and that won't bode well for those who think he'll just play the mainline ...d6 move.
Sep-17-06  soughzin: So if Arno takes an extra day will it not count for the summer leg?
Sep-17-06
Premium Chessgames Member
Chessgames Bookie: It will count towards the summer leg in all cases. If Mr. Nickel takes an extra day then it will be settled on the 19th and be the last wager settled for the summer leg.

  lostemperor: <TrueBlue> What happened? I thought you said Nickel will play 7 ... Nf6? He played 7 ... g6!
Sep-18-06  TrueBlue: lostemperor, I was wrong :) Even TrueBlues are wrong some times. I guess Nickel was too chicken to play Nf6! I think Nickel will play d6 next, but with my track record, don't bet too much money on it :)
Sep-18-06  TrueBlue: here is more info why I was wrong:

<chessgames.com: We have the pleasure of passing along a message from Arno Nickel: <<

I really enjoy the event, which you have organized very effectively and in a fine style.

I suspect, people might have feared or hoped I could reply Nf6 to Qg4, though I never thought about it very seriously. It's much too committing in a correspondence game, if you don't have a concrete plan how to win with such a move. There isn't one... Maybe Black would have to work hard in order to achieve a draw. Anyway, I always prefer flexible play - as long as possible - giving the opponent a maximum chance to blunder. Things might be completely different in an over-the-board-game, when psychological reasons come into consideration and you have a good chance to shock your opponent.

If you like, you may quote this as my message on chessgames.com. Maybe, people like to hear also something from my side from time to time.

Arno>

Sep-18-06  soughzin: All my 5603$ plus a 3000$ loan on d6 should boost me up to 7667$, hope it's enough! It's been an interesting leg. I predict many will be broke after the Kramnik-Topalov match next leg.
Sep-18-06  TrueBlue: bet on Topa and you should be OK ;)
